Lewis Hamilton’s return to the front of the Formula 1 field has surprised some observers and validated the expectations of others, but one thing is certain: it has not gone unnoticed. The seven-time world champion’s victory in Barcelona, his first with Ferrari, was the highlight of a strong run of form that began with a second-place finish in Montreal and continued through Monaco.
More importantly, the recent results have confirmed the growing confidence Lewis Hamilton is feeling behind the wheel of the SF-26. According to Carlos Sainz, this renewed competitiveness highlights a key aspect of Formula 1 that is often overlooked when evaluating a driver’s performance: the relationship between driving style and car characteristics.
The importance of adaptation in Formula 1
Speaking after the Spanish Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz reflected on Lewis Hamilton’s victory and the factors that contributed to his impressive turnaround.
“In the end, what happened in Barcelona shows that there are no secrets in this sport,” Carlos Sainz explained, as quoted by Motorsport.com. “I think Formula 1 is filled with talented drivers, but every driver has different characteristics and a different driving style. Because of that, it is perfectly normal for some cars to suit a driver and for others not to.”
“The real skill of a Formula 1 driver is being able to adapt to whatever car is placed in front of them and drive it at the limit. Something similar happened to me in 2022. At the beginning of that season, I had a Ferrari that I did not particularly enjoy driving. Then I adapted, and in 2023 and 2024 I believe I performed at a very high level.”
Carlos Sainz suggested that a driver’s ability to adapt can often define an entire career. He pointed out that joining a team with a car that does not match a driver’s natural style can lead to years of frustration, while moving to a team whose car suits that style can dramatically transform public perception.
“This is something that can determine your entire career,” Carlos Sainz continued. “You can join a team with a car that does not suit you and spend three years struggling to adapt, which can make you look ineffective. Then you move to a team where the car perfectly matches your style and suddenly you look like a superstar.”
“This sport is far more complicated than people think. It needs to be explained properly because fans should better understand how things work and why changing teams is never easy. That is one reason why I believe my season last year had a lot of value. The podiums at the end of the year and my performances during the first half of 2026 may not receive much attention, but I feel I am having a positive season.”
Carlos Sainz’s praise for Lewis Hamilton
Despite discussing his own experiences, Carlos Sainz was also keen to acknowledge the achievements of the man who replaced him at Ferrari.
The Spanish driver believes Lewis Hamilton deserves significant credit for the way he has managed to reverse his fortunes after a difficult 2025 campaign and establish himself once again among Formula 1’s leading contenders.
“He deserves a lot of recognition for turning the situation around from last year to this year and for doing it in the way he has done it,” – the Williams driver said.
“Of course, he has also benefited from the regulation changes because if he had been stuck with last year’s car for another three seasons, perhaps we would not be seeing the Lewis Hamilton that we are seeing this year.”
Those comments underline the extent of Lewis Hamilton’s transformation. While the 2026 technical regulations have undoubtedly played a role in Ferrari’s improved competitiveness, Carlos Sainz believes the British driver’s ability to adapt and maximize the opportunities presented to him deserves equal recognition.
As Ferrari continues its push towards the front of the grid, Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence has become one of the defining stories of the season, and one that even his predecessor at Maranello has openly admired.
