Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz has given an insight into his battle against the Red Bull RB18 of Max Verstappen after the Spaniard passed the 2022 Formula 1 world champion to take second place in the 2022 Formula Brazil Sprint, even though Carlos will have to start Sunday’s main race from seventh place due to a grid penalty received for a power unit component change ahead of the Sao Paulo weekend.
After starting the Sprint event from fifth position, Carlos Sainz had a strong performance at the Interlagos circuit fighting his way back into the top three following some great passes on Lando Norris and Kevin Magnussen.
Equipped with the Soft red tyres, Carlos Sainz then recovered the gap to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who was one of only two drivers to run on the Medium tyres: with five laps until the end of the Sprint race, the Ferrari driver overtook the Dutchman to take second place.
In the process of the Turn 1 pass, the rear of Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari F1-75 challenger made contact with the Red Bull driver’s front wing, which caused some damage to Max Verstappen’s car.

“I managed to make all the positions at the start for the first couple of laps, joining the fight with Max and George,” Carlos Sainz explained at the end of the 2022 Brazilian Sprint race in Sao Paulo – “I had to be aggressive because obviously tomorrow I’m taking the penalty. In the end, I think P2 was the maximum today. When passing a Red Bull, you’re either aggressive on the braking or you don’t pass them because they’re so quick on the straight. I’m sorry if I had a bit of contact, but that’s racing and sometimes you need to go for it if you want to make it stick.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz added when asked about his move on Max Verstappen.
