An unexpected result, because the starting position was 15th, and certainly the Hungaroring is not the most suitable circuit for comebacks. But the episodes disrupted the race from the first corner, where Valtteri Bottas and Lance Stroll bowled with the various Perez, Leclerc, Norris, Ricciardo and Verstappen, giving an unexpected wildcard to those who had difficulties on Saturday. Like Carlos Sainz, who recovered from the eighth row to an incredible fourth place just a few hours ago. But there are 12 points that only partially tell the potential of Ferrari in Hungary: team principal Mattia Binotto took it out on the chaos in the pits, with the teams that – according to him – violated the rule on unsafe releases. In fact, Carlos Sainz found himself fifth, before overtaking Yuki Tsunoda and Nicholas Latifi in the second pit stop. But the first two were now gone, and the former McLaren tried in vain to defend the podium from the clutches of Lewis Hamilton, who, however, had a superior car and fresher tires.
These are Carlos Sainz’s words after the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix: “Defending against Lewis? I had no more tires, for sure. He made me push hard with the hard, at the start of the stint he was behind me and I had to go fast to keep him behind. There I ruined the tires quite a lot and I also used a lot of fuell. At the end of the race I did the last ten laps saving a lot of fuel. Then there was Ricciardo who didn’t give us a hand at the last corner and did a bit of blocking, allowing Lewis to be closer. But there were still six to seven laps left and I think Lewis would have passed anyway” – Carlos told Sky Sport F1 after the race
“In general, in the first half of the season I was very fast, I got on very well with the team and the car. But I think we haven’t had full weekends yet to put it all together. This weekend is a good example. I made a mistake in qualifying yesterday and two details were missing today. Had it not been for those, one could also fight for victory. On this we must continue to improve, I’m sure the second half of the season will be better.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz concluded.
