During the third free practice session (FP3) for the Barcelona Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was involved in a controversial incident. The moment occurred when the Ferrari man impeded AlphaTauri driver Nyck de Vries during a potentially fast lap.
The Spaniard prevented the Dutchman from completing the lap in the final mixed section, forcing him to abruptly slow down. This visibly upset Nyck De Vries, who did not hesitate to express his dissatisfaction with Carlos Sainz, while AlphaTauri reported the double block to the FIA.
However, despite the impeding, thankfully Carlos Sainz did not receive any penalty from the stewards. The main reason for this decision is that it was a free practice session, during which the rules regarding on-track conduct are generally less strict than in qualifying or the race. Nevertheless, the incident highlights the importance of respecting the rules and sportsmanship even in free practice sessions, where drivers strive to extract the maximum performance from their cars in preparation for the official sessions, especially recalling what happened to Charles Leclerc in Monaco last weekend.
