Carlos Sainz contract extension: Spanish driver reveals when negotiations with Ferrari will start

Despite the many speculations about his future, Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz has provided an update on the renewal negotiations with the Maranello team, as the initial discussions are set to begin around the winter break. Thanks to his strong performance this year, culminating in his splendid victory at the Marina Bay street circuit in Singapore, the Spaniard has earned his contract renewal on the track. However, for the time being, all his focus is on the end of the 2023 Formula 1 season.

Carlos Sainz’s Renewal: Initial Negotiations to Start Around the Winter Break
“My point of view is that I feel comfortable,” said the Spanish driver ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix, which is scheduled to take place this weekend at the 4.304-kilometre Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City . “I’m happy in Ferrari. I have trust in the team. I see positive steps being taken in the right direction. I see a committed team working in the right direction.”

“I’ve always said that I’m happy here and that the winter would be a good time to sit down and see if we could find an agreement for the future. If they are happy with me and I am happy with them, it shouldn’t be a problem. Let’s hope it happens this winter. If not, it might drag on a bit longer, but we’ll see.” – the Spaniard continued.

Carlos Sainz has consistently expressed the need to start the season with the contract already settled. With the current agreement expiring in 2024, it’s clear that both parties will have to sit down and reach a new agreement before the start of the championship, if not even before pre-season testing.

Thanks in part to his Maranello teammate’s disqualification in the last Grand Prix in Austin, the Spaniard is ahead in the standings with a significant 20-point lead. Despite a lackluster start to the season, the Madrilenian has risen to the occasion after the summer break, securing a podium at Monza and the victory in Singapore.

Reflecting on his 2023 Formula 1 campaign, Carlos Sainz commented: “I believe that overall, it has been a decent season. I felt comfortable with the car right from the start of the year. Then, during the early part of the season, we tried to understand where we were, as we were suddenly half a second behind Red Bull, while at other circuits, we were almost on pole position. I think it was necessary to figure out what was happening and what Red Bull had done, dominating suddenly the way they were.”

“The first part was obviously a bit below expectations. Then we put our heads down and started working well, and we seized the opportunity when it came in Singapore. I think this means a lot to us this year,” concludes the Ferrari driver.
