Ferrari, Carlos Sainz challenges Red Bull
Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz has always said it: if Red Bull misses a beat, the Maranello team must seize the opportunity. And the Spaniard has kept his promise, winning a Singapore Grand Prix in which the RB19 and Max Verstappen took a brief step back, sparing Formula 1 fans from another Sunday of dominance.
The victory at the Marina Bay street circuit – the second of his career – has motivated the Spanish driver, who now looks ahead to the 2024 Formula 1 season with much more confidence. Carlos Sainz, somewhat off the pace in Suzuka but in excellent form since Formula 1 returned from the break, believes that the progress of the SF-23 confirms how the Maranello team has patched up the car’s limits for this year; and for 2024, the task is to return to competitiveness, because Ferrari has shown it can beat Red Bull.
Carlos Sainz’s comments:
“I’m always optimistic before the start of the season. You have to be, in the last two years, the only ones capable of challenging Red Bull have been Ferrari, in the first half of last year and now in Singapore. With the new regulations, Red Bull is almost unbeatable, but if there’s anyone who can beat them, it’s us,” were the words of #55 in a recent press conference at an event for an official partner – “I think I’m in the best place to be competitive in 2024, with six races to go we still have time to figure out what we need to improve and prepare ourselves as best as we can. We know exactly what we lack; we’ve managed to understand and identify it. Another thing is the ability to react; we’ll see if we can do it right from the first race next year. Time will tell.” – the Spaniard pointed out, just a few days ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix weekend.
“For me, Red Bull makes the difference; without them, Ferrari would be having a pretty good year; in fact, it would be one of the most competitive seasons, given the battle between us, Aston Martin, McLaren, Mercedes: we’re all at a very similar level, but there’s someone with half a second of an advantage. Copying their concept? Once you have it, Red Bull would still be two years ahead; that’s why it’s difficult to reach their level. We have no choice but to focus on our work.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz concluded.
