While Charles Leclerc is smiling, Carlos Sainz ended the first day on the Monaco track with a grim face. The Ferrari driver finished Free Practice 2 in Monte Carlo with an anonymous sixth place, almost 0.7 seconds behind the benchmark set by his Maranello teammate.
Charles Leclerc immediately appeared comfortable at the wheel of the SF-24 from the first lap of Free Practice 1, while Carlos Sainz admitted to struggling all day, especially in Free Practice 2, when he realized that the changes made to his car were not at all productive, neither for the single lap nor for race pace.
“Today we definitely struggled on the single lap. We just weren’t able to extract the maximum performance from the medium or the soft tire in one lap. And then, for some reason, in the long runs, we struggled and saw it very quickly, so yes, there’s something to understand, but I hope we will find some answers for tomorrow.” – the Spanish driver pointed out at the end of the second free practice session for the Monaco Grand Prix.
What worries Carlos Sainz the most is the race pace, although Monte Carlo is such a narrow track for the current cars that today’s qualifying session will be crucial for the final result of the Monaco weekend, barring any dramatic turn of events for the drivers starting at the front.
“We got a bit lost with the setup changes at the beginning of FP2, which set me back a bit for the entire duration of FP2, and I seemed to recover a bit too late in the long run, so I hope to improve for qualifying, but it wasn’t an ideal start to the weekend. I hope to be in better shape tomorrow.” – the Ferrari driver added – “Monaco has always been one of the tracks where I’ve performed best, so it’s strange what happened today. At the same time, when I see that I’m probably the the fastest on race pace, there’s something to understand, and if we put everything together, we should be fine for tomorrow,” concluded Carlos Sainz.
