Carlos Sainz can smile – at least partially – at the end of qualifying for the Italian GP which defined the starting grid for tomorrow’s Sprint Qualifying. The Scuderia Ferrari driver, who is taking part in his first Monza race alongside the Maranello team, was able to score a dignified seventh place on the starting grid, even ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc, who was slowed down by technical problems on his SF21 car.
Speaking in an interview for Sky Sport F1, Carlos Sainz analyzed today’s session, recognizing how it would not have been possible to get a better result for the reds. “We know we have weaknesses at this circuit. We saw last year that this is a difficult track due to the characteristics of our car – the Spaniard underlined, referring to the results of Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel in 2020 – but we managed to improve a lot compared to last year. Last year the result was 13th and out in Q1. This year, however, we are in the top-8. Progress is there, but it is not enough. We want more. We know that we want to do more in front of our fans. But today it was not possible to do better than 20.3-20.4 ”.
“If we will take a chance tomorrow? – Carlos Sainz was asked, turning his thoughts to the two races on Saturday and Sunday – “We know that our position is what it is. Gasly is two tenths ahead. Perez should also be in front, but he’s not there. We are between the seventh and eighth place. What can help us is to make two good starts. Maybe with those we can earn something at the end of the weekend, but in terms of pace we won’t have much more “, he concluded.
