Charles Leclerc has made no secret of his ambition to secure Formula 1 World Championship glory with Ferrari, but the Monegasque driver is hoping his journey to the top will be slightly quicker than the path taken by Scuderia legend Michael Schumacher.
Fresh from signing a new long-term contract with Ferrari ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, Charles Leclerc has once again underlined his commitment to the team that he has dreamed of driving for since childhood. The contract extension is another sign that both Ferrari and Charles Leclerc remain fully invested in a project aimed at returning the iconic Italian outfit to the summit of Formula 1.
With Charles Leclerc set to celebrate his 29th birthday later this year, the latest agreement is expected to keep him in Ferrari colours well into the next decade. If he remains with the Scuderia for the duration many expect, he could eventually become the longest-serving Ferrari driver in Formula 1 history.
That achievement would place the Monegasque ahead of some of the most famous names ever to race for Ferrari, including Michael Schumacher, whose legacy at Maranello remains unmatched in the modern era.
Charles Leclerc closing in on a remarkable Ferrari milestone
While much of the attention surrounding Charles Leclerc focuses on his pursuit of a first Formula 1 World Championship, another significant milestone is quietly approaching.
Having already amassed 155 Grand Prix starts for Ferrari, Charles Leclerc currently ranks among the most experienced drivers in the team’s history. Only Michael Schumacher sits ahead of him with 180 race starts for the Scuderia, a figure that could eventually be surpassed if the Monegasque continues his long-term relationship with the team.
The statistic highlights how dramatically Formula 1 has changed over the years. Modern calendars now feature more than 20 race weekends per season, allowing drivers to accumulate starts at a much faster rate than previous generations.
However, another comparison between Charles Leclerc and Michael Schumacher paints a very different picture.
Despite competing in only 25 more Grands Prix for Ferrari, Michael Schumacher collected an astonishing number of victories during his time with the Scuderia. The German transformed Ferrari into the dominant force of the early 2000s and delivered a level of success that remains one of the greatest achievements in Formula 1 history.
For Charles Leclerc, race victories have been considerably harder to come by. While he has consistently demonstrated world-class speed and has delivered numerous memorable performances, circumstances, reliability issues and fluctuating competitiveness have often prevented him from converting opportunities into championship success.
Charles Leclerc hopes Ferrari title success arrives sooner
During a recent interview in the Monaco paddock, the 28-year-old was reminded that Michael Schumacher did not win his first Formula 1 World Championship with Ferrari until the age of 31.
When presented with the comparison, Charles Leclerc admitted that he would prefer not to wait quite that long before delivering the ultimate prize to the Tifosi.
The Ferrari driver acknowledged that Michael Schumacher’s accomplishments remain extraordinary and suggested that merely coming close to matching those achievements would represent an incredible accomplishment. At the same time, Charles Leclerc stressed that there is still a significant amount of work ahead before Ferrari can consistently challenge for championship honours.
The Monegasque also reflected on the deep emotional connection he has always felt with Ferrari. According to Charles Leclerc, his fascination with the Scuderia began long before he entered Formula 1, dating back to his earliest memories of watching races and searching for the red cars on track.
That passion, he explained, has never faded. Even after years of competing for Ferrari at the highest level of motorsport, Charles Leclerc continues to view representing the famous Maranello team as both a privilege and a responsibility.
Fred Vasseur remains a key figure in Ferrari project
Charles Leclerc also highlighted the importance of his relationship with Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur, a partnership that stretches back many years.
The two first worked together during Charles Leclerc’s rookie Formula 1 campaign in 2018 when Fred Vasseur was leading the Alfa Romeo operation. Their successful collaboration laid the foundations for a strong professional relationship that was renewed when Fred Vasseur took charge of Ferrari ahead of the 2023 season.
According to Charles Leclerc, the pair have experienced both difficult periods and memorable moments together, experiences that have helped strengthen the trust between them.
The Ferrari driver indicated that he has complete faith in the direction of the team and enjoys an excellent relationship with Fred Vasseur. He suggested that this mutual trust played an important role in the decision to extend his stay with Ferrari.
Charles Leclerc also emphasised that loyalty remains one of the most important values in his career. He noted that Ferrari placed its faith in him from the beginning and provided him with the opportunity to develop into one of Formula 1’s leading drivers.
Nevertheless, Charles Leclerc made it clear that sentiment alone is not enough. Despite the contract extension and the strong bonds within the team, the ultimate objective remains unchanged.
The Monegasque insisted that Ferrari’s mission is to win the Formula 1 World Championship and return to the top of the sport. While the road ahead may still be challenging, Charles Leclerc remains convinced that the dream he has chased since childhood can still become reality.
With Lewis Hamilton now partnering Charles Leclerc at Ferrari and the Scuderia continuing its push to end its lengthy title drought, the pressure and expectations have never been higher. Yet for Charles Leclerc, the goal remains crystal clear: write his own chapter in Ferrari history while creating a legacy worthy of being mentioned alongside Michael Schumacher’s greatest achievements.
