With its provisional approval to join the Formula 1 grid in 2026, Cadillac has already begun the process of assembling its driver lineup. However, the team will not settle for just any driver, as the right choices are crucial to their long-term success.
One prominent candidate being considered by Cadillac is Carlos Sainz Jr., who recently saw his contract with Ferrari come to an end. While the Spanish driver brings considerable experience to the table, former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve has pointed out a few potential drawbacks to the move.
Carlos Sainz: The Ideal Fit for Cadillac F1?
As Cadillac prepares to make its Formula 1 debut in 2026, the team has a clear objective: to create a competitive force on the grid. This coincides with the introduction of new engine regulations, and Cadillac plans to transition from using Ferrari’s customer engines to developing its own in-house power unit later in the decade.
One key goal for the team is to sign an American driver, which would establish a pathway for US-based drivers to enter Formula 1. The challenge of finding American-born drivers capable of making the transition to F1 has historically been significant, especially for those without the financial resources to move to Europe and integrate into the sport’s ecosystem.
This commitment to fostering American talent may lead Cadillac to secure at least one rookie driver for their inaugural season. However, for the second seat, it would be wise to opt for a driver with proven experience and knowledge of the series.
Several high-profile names have been suggested for consideration by the team, including Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Perez, and Valtteri Bottas. However, 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has proposed another option: Carlos Sainz Jr. Before the 2024 F1 season began, Carlos Sainz was informed that he would be replaced at Ferrari by Lewis Hamilton in the upcoming year. While he explored various opportunities with other teams, he ultimately ended up signing with Williams.
Carlos Sainz has shown unwavering dedication to returning Ferrari to its winning ways, yet many industry observers have speculated that the 2025 season will serve as a temporary phase in his career before he secures a more permanent position with a top team.
In a recent discussion for Spin Casino, former Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve pointed out that “for a team like this, Carlos Sainz is exactly the right type because he keeps helping teams build. That is why Williams took him, and I am not sure they would be willing to let him go for 2026.” – the Canadian added.
Jacques Villeneuve’s argument is likely valid. The Spaniard secured a “multi-year” contract with Williams, and allowing him to join a rival team would be a misstep. At the same time, the Formula 1 driver believes that Cadillac had likely “already been inundated by calls from managers and drivers. They will all be saying. ‘I am the perfect one to help you build your team.’ It won’t be easy for them because a driver with the necessary experience at a top team would not be happy just to be part of building a team. It would not be a first choice destination for any of the top drivers.” – he explained.
Could Jacques Villeneuve’s comment serve as a cautionary note?
Carlos Sainz, with multiple race victories and almost ten years of Formula 1 experience, undeniably fits the description of a “top driver.” His move to Williams, however, came largely due to a lack of interest from other teams, rather than as part of a long-term strategic choice. Now, the question arises: could Sainz see any value in using his time at Williams to help develop the team for a season, only to transition to Cadillac afterward?
This scenario would undoubtedly pose a significant risk for the Spanish driver. Whether this decision will ultimately prove beneficial for his career remains to be seen, and only the passage of time will reveal if it’s a gamble worth taking.
