As the new Formula 1 regulations approach, speculation about the favorites for 2026 is increasing. Ferrari, after a disappointing season and a long trophy drought, will be under pressure to bounce back. Mario Andretti highlighted a factor that could give the Scuderia a clear advantage for next year.
Cadillac will use Ferrari engines, a point of pride for the 1978 World Champion. In addition, the American team will run track tests using the SF-23 with Sergio Perez ahead of their debut next year. This establishes a direct technical link between the two teams, offering Ferrari valuable data and insights.
Mario Andretti backs Ferrari
Speaking at the Festival dello Sport in Trento, Mario Andretti discussed several aspects of Ferrari, including predictions for 2026. Next year’s regulations will radically change the cars, creating opportunities for all teams. However, certain factors will favor experienced teams like Ferrari.
“Fans should have absolute confidence,” Andretti said. “It’s like starting from scratch. Engines, chassis, everything is new. The cars are different, even the tires. Engineers are like lawyers; they exploit the rules to the fullest.”
While uncertainties remain, Ferrari has a key strength: “It’s about who can maximize the new regulations. But I would always bet on teams with more experience, like Ferrari.” Mario Andretti also jokingly noted that despite his commitment to Cadillac, it will be hard not to root for Ferrari next season.
Thoughts on the drivers
Mario Andretti also shared his views on Ferrari’s drivers: “With Hamilton, patience is needed. He had some difficulties settling in, but next year will be completely different.” He emphasized his confidence in Ferrari’s project, suggesting that Lewis Hamilton could become a decisive factor in 2026.
“I really like Charles Leclerc,” Mario Andretti added. “He has shown he can compete well against a seven-time World Champion like Lewis. He deserves another strong car, but Ferrari will always be there. Sooner or later, they will bring something exceptional.”
