Lewis Hamilton has convinced Ferrari to make an early switch to soft slick tyres during the 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix after repeatedly highlighting the improving track conditions at Interlagos. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion had urged his team to consider abandoning wet-weather tyres as a dry racing line began to emerge, eventually making the change on lap 15 of the 71-lap race.
However, the decision came with an immediate disadvantage. Hamilton rejoined the race in 20th position, leaving him with considerable ground to recover while facing the challenge of bringing his slick tyres up to temperature on a circuit that remained slippery in places. Whether Ferrari’s decision would prove advantageous depended on how quickly the track continued drying and whether the Briton could extract sufficient performance from the new tyres.
Lewis Hamilton urges Ferrari to switch to slick tyres as Interlagos dries
The discussion began when Hamilton reported that conditions were becoming increasingly suitable for dry-weather tyres, even though the track had not yet reached a completely dry state.
“There is a dry line starting to show!” the Ferrari driver explained over the team radio, indicating that the racing surface was changing sufficiently for an alternative tyre choice to become a realistic consideration.
Hamilton also recognised that making the switch would involve a degree of risk, particularly during the opening laps on slick tyres.
“It’s on the edge for sure. If you get tyre temperature it will be good,” he continued, underlining the importance of generating enough heat in the tyres to make the strategy effective.
The Briton then identified a specific area of the circuit where grip remained a concern.
“The only place that’s slippery is out of 12,” Hamilton reported, referring to the exit of Turn 12 at Interlagos.
His assessment suggested that a dry racing line was becoming established across much of the circuit, although the comments did not establish that slick tyres were already the quickest option. The performance difference would depend on the remaining moisture and the ability to maintain tyre temperature.
Ferrari initially tells Lewis Hamilton to wait before changing tyres
Despite Hamilton’s increasingly positive assessment of the track conditions, Ferrari initially instructed him to remain on his existing tyres.
The team indicated that it was still necessary to wait before committing to the change, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the crossover point between wet-weather and slick tyres.
At Interlagos, the decision carries particular significance because a drying circuit can offer an advantage to drivers who switch at the right moment. However, choosing slicks too early can leave a driver struggling for grip while the tyres warm up, especially in the remaining damp areas.
Hamilton’s comments highlighted that precise concern. Although he believed the emerging dry line could support a switch, he also acknowledged that the tyres would only work effectively if sufficient temperature could be generated.
Ferrari therefore faced a choice between waiting for more favourable conditions and acting earlier in the hope of benefiting as the circuit continued to dry.
Ferrari makes the call on lap 15 as Lewis Hamilton rejoins in P20
On lap 15, Ferrari finally committed to the change Hamilton had been requesting.
The seven-time world champion entered the pits and received a set of soft slick tyres, becoming committed to the dry-weather compound despite the remaining slippery sections of the circuit.
He returned to the race in 20th position, a significant loss of track position that made the performance of the new tyres especially important.
From that point, Hamilton’s immediate challenge was to generate sufficient tyre temperature without making mistakes on the drying surface. The exit of Turn 12 was one area he had already identified as particularly slippery, making it an important section to negotiate carefully.
The choice of the soft compound also placed emphasis on obtaining performance from the tyres as quickly as possible, although the available information does not establish how rapidly Hamilton was able to warm them or whether the switch immediately improved his lap times.
Lewis Hamilton’s Brazilian GP tyre gamble puts Ferrari strategy under scrutiny
For Ferrari, the decision represented a calculated attempt to respond to evolving track conditions rather than simply follow the original tyre choice.
Hamilton had provided direct feedback about the improving racing line, the areas where grip remained limited and the importance of tyre temperature. Ferrari initially preferred to wait but ultimately authorised the switch on lap 15.
The crucial question was whether the potential pace advantage of slick tyres could compensate for the time lost during the pit stop and the difficulty of warming the tyres on a damp circuit.
Rejoining 20th meant Hamilton needed the strategy to deliver enough performance to support another recovery through the field. However, without subsequent sector times or information about rival tyre choices, it was too early to determine whether Ferrari had made the switch at the optimum moment.
What was already clear was Hamilton’s active role in the decision. His repeated radio messages helped frame Ferrari’s assessment of the changing conditions before the team eventually made the call to fit soft slicks.
With most of the Brazilian Grand Prix still to run, the effectiveness of that decision would become clearer as the track evolved and Hamilton attempted to recover the positions lost through his pit stop.
