Charles Leclerc is facing a potential FIA penalty following the 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix after being summoned by the stewards over an incident involving Liam Lawson at Interlagos. The Ferrari driver has been called to explain an episode at Turn 12 involving the Racing Bulls driver, raising the possibility of further consequences after the race.
The summons was confirmed through official FIA Document No. 72, which requests the attendance of Charles Leclerc and a representative of Ferrari before the stewards. Although the investigation could result in a penalty, no sporting sanction has been announced at this stage.
Charles Leclerc summoned by FIA stewards over Brazilian GP incident with Liam Lawson
According to the official document, the incident under investigation concerns a close-contact situation involving car number 16, driven by Charles Leclerc, and car number 30, driven by Liam Lawson.
The episode occurred at Turn 12 of the Interlagos circuit at 15:36. The regulatory provision cited in the summons concerns driving standards, including the rules governing overtaking manoeuvres and conduct during wheel-to-wheel battles.
The FIA therefore requested that Charles Leclerc and a Ferrari representative attend a hearing with the stewards at 16:45 to provide explanations about what happened.
The investigation brings further scrutiny to the Ferrari driver’s on-track conduct following the Brazilian Grand Prix. Questions surrounding Charles Leclerc’s racecraft had already attracted attention following his earlier confrontation with Lewis Hamilton at the Mexico City Grand Prix, although the incident involving Liam Lawson is a separate matter.
Could Charles Leclerc receive a penalty after the Brazilian GP?
Being summoned to the stewards does not automatically mean Charles Leclerc will receive a penalty. However, it confirms that FIA officials consider the circumstances worthy of further examination.
If the stewards determine that a breach of the regulations occurred, the Ferrari driver could face a sanction. The exact nature of any punishment would depend on their assessment of the incident.
Possible consequences include a time penalty, a reprimand or another sanction permitted under the sporting regulations, depending on the seriousness of any infringement established. For the moment, however, no official decision has been communicated. FIA Document No. 72 confirms only that the Ferrari driver has been summoned to attend a hearing.
The final decision will be made after the stewards have reviewed the available footage and heard the explanations provided by Charles Leclerc and Ferrari. Importantly, the document does not establish which driver was responsible for the incident, nor does it provide a detailed description of how the contact occurred. Until the stewards publish their verdict, responsibility cannot be attributed conclusively to the Monegasque.
The investigation therefore leaves Charles Leclerc facing uncertainty over the outcome of his Brazilian Grand Prix, with Ferrari awaiting the stewards’ decision on whether any further action is necessary.
