Brad Pitt Reveals Lewis Hamilton’s Crucial Role in Making F1: The Movie Ultra-Realistic
Formula 1 has become a benchmark for other industries looking to engage new audiences, successfully transforming itself into a global entertainment powerhouse. As interest in motorsport continues to grow, Hollywood has stepped in with a major production that promises to take that momentum even further: F1: The Movie, starring Brad Pitt.
Following the success of Netflix’s Drive to Survive, which introduced millions of new fans to Formula 1, this new cinematic venture represents the sport’s next ambitious leap into mainstream pop culture. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the movie features Brad Pitt in the lead role and includes seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton as a key creative force behind the scenes. Hamilton didn’t just lend his name to the project—he was brought on board as a producer and technical advisor, ensuring that the film’s portrayal of Formula 1 was accurate, authentic, and engaging.
The production team also drew on the expertise of well-known F1 broadcasters Martin Brundle and David Croft, while technical analysts Bernie Collins and Ruth Buscombe were consulted to help make the dialogue and race strategy in the script feel as true-to-life as possible. Meanwhile, real F1 drivers were instructed to behave as naturally as possible around Brad Pitt whenever he was present in the paddock, allowing the film to blend seamlessly with real-world race weekends.
The fictional Apex Grand Prix team, for which Pitt’s character drives, even appeared on the official F1 grid multiple times during filming, complete with custom liveries and branding integrated into real events. One of the key figures responsible for maintaining authenticity throughout the movie was Lewis Hamilton himself. His meticulous attention to detail was essential in identifying and correcting any inaccuracies, from technical aspects of car behavior to the sound design.
In an interview posted on Formula 1’s official YouTube channel, Pitt opened up about the collaborative process, expressing his admiration for the Ferrari driver’s involvement. He described how the Mercedes driver played an indispensable role in maintaining the realism of the film. Brad Pitt noted that Lewis Hamilton was not only attentive to broader themes but was also capable of identifying subtle discrepancies—such as the reverb heard on specific turns or incorrect corner references in audio. According to Brad Pitt, Lewis Hamilton was so precise that he could detect when a corner’s engine sound was misaligned with the actual location on a circuit, something that left a lasting impression on the actor.
When asked about how early Lewis Hamilton had joined the project, Brad Pitt explained that director Joseph Kosinski had approached the F1 star even before bringing him on board. Lewis Hamilton’s agreement to participate gave Kosinski the confidence that the film could reach the high standard he envisioned, particularly in terms of realism with car handling and race footage.
While Hamilton served as the face of the project in many promotional efforts, other F1 drivers also played behind-the-scenes roles during production. During the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, George Russell and Charles Leclerc joined Pitt on the podium for celebratory shots, despite the fact that Leclerc had actually finished in fifth place. The podium celebration was staged for the film, aligning with the plot’s fictional narrative.
Pierre Gasly also contributed to the project in an unexpected way—his Alpine F1 car was used in actual race footage at Spa-Francorchamps, later digitally modified with Apex Grand Prix livery for use in the movie.
Although F1: The Movie was shrouded in secrecy prior to its release, early reactions have been largely positive. A private screening held for drivers featured a scene that reportedly made the entire group burst into laughter. However, the film’s intense focus on technical accuracy and realism may have posed challenges for more casual viewers unfamiliar with the sport’s nuances.
Despite this, Brad Pitt made it clear that Lewis Hamilton’s involvement was critical to the film’s integrity. His contribution ensured that even the smallest details—whether related to the cars, the circuits, or the sport’s unique culture—were captured with care and precision. Without Lewis Hamilton’s influence, Pitt suggested, the film would not have been able to reach the level of authenticity it ultimately achieved.
