On the starting grid for the 2023 Formula 1 season there are only two seats that have yet to be assigned, although perhaps it is more correct to say only one. Williams, in fact, seems ready to focus on Logan Sargeant who is only missing only his super licence, which he would need in order to secure a Formula 1 seat. For this he will have to wait until the final round of the 2022 Formula 1 championship, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina.
A different situation at Haas where there are three or even four candidates still taken into consideration alongside the confirmed Kevin Magnussen: Antonio Giovinazzi, Mick Schumacher, Robert Shwartzman and Nico Hulkenberg.
In the first free practice session for the United States Grand Prix, which takes place later today, Antonio Giovinazzi and Mick Schumacher will be on the track at the same time for Haas, while Robert Shwartzman will get the chance to drive the Ferrari F1-75 car, replacing Charles Leclerc for FP1 at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA).
A real and even direct comparison in Haas as underlined by today’s edition of Il Corriere dello Sport which also traces the various ‘sponsors’ of the candidates for the final place on the grid: “Everything will be observed” – the Italian daily newspaper writes, regarding the first free practice session scheduled today in Austin – “Ferrari needs a reliable reserve driver and if one between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were to stop (due to a common reason such as Covid-19), a debut for Mick Schumacher behind the wheel of a Ferrari car would involve risks, with the attention of media making things even more difficult. For this reason, Mattia Binotto wants Antonio Giovinazzi to get a seat in F1. […] Hulkenberg is appreciated by the owner Gene Haas, but taking him by discarding the Ferrari alternatives would prevent Maranello from having a third driver ready. […] Robert Shwartzman is supported by sporting director Laurent Mekies, thanks to his status of Ferrari Driver Academy member, but he would be a rookie, with all the risks that such a status brings.” – Corriere dello Sport wrote.
