British former business magnate Bernie Ecclestone, the former chief executive of the Formula One Group, gave an interview to DPA on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the terrible skiing accident in which the seven-time world champion, Michael Schumacher, was seriously injured.
“I knew he had talent,” commented the 93-year-old. “Eddie Jordan was very convinced of him; he had a good eye. Michael would have surely found another place, and we stole him from Jordan.” – he pointed out.
Speaking about Michael Schumacher’s time with Scuderia Ferrari, during which the German led the Maranello team to victory, the British executive shared a behind-the-scenes story:
“One day we were sitting at a table, and I said to him, ‘Who is leading this team?’ He replied, ‘I am going to do it.’ And he did well; he could bring out the best in people. He earned the respect of the people who listened to him. Whenever he said something, they knew it was the right thing. Whatever Michael said something to Jean Todt, he listened and did it.” – Bernie Ecclestone continued.
Finally, a thought on the German champion whom he described as “a good guy”: “I miss him; he will always be remembered as a star.” – the former chief executive of the Formula One Group concluded.
