The Spa-Francorchamps circuit is part of the exclusive group of historic circuits where Formula 1 still races today. However, the event organizers have been required to improve both the track, in terms of driver safety, and the fan experience to avoid a repetition of what happened in the 2021 edition.
The automotive facility has done everything possible to meet the demands set by Liberty Media, aided by an €80 million investment from the Belgian government. Thanks to the improvements and various non-motorsport events held last year, Spa has secured a contract extension until 2023.
Looking ahead to 2024, it is uncertain whether the Grand Prix will once again be held at the motorsport university, although, at least for now, the Belgian event seems secure due to Kyalami’s withdrawal. Discussions with Formula 1, however, are still ongoing.
Belgian GP: A sold-out for the 2023 edition
Despite the uncertainty surrounding its future on the Formula 1 calendar, the Spa-Francorchamps circuit has already sold out for the entire weekend. Over a month before the race weekend, the organizers have announced that every single ticket has been sold, and the only available seats to watch the races are those in the “Dinner in the Sky” experience, where spectators can have lunch in a restaurant suspended in the air at a height of forty-five meters on a crane.
The commercial director of the Belgian GP, Stijn de Boever, recently spoke to motorsport.com, saying: “We have increased our capacity from 100,000 to 110,000 spectators per day, with an additional 10,000 tickets compared to last year. We have two new grandstands in front of the pits, and as requested, we have improved the safety and facilities to accommodate these additional fans.”

The circuit spokesperson continued: “We are moving in the same direction with more off-track entertainment options, with several artists to be announced in the coming weeks. There will also be new parking areas and zones to make arrival at Spa even smoother. Cars without parking stickers will not be allowed near the circuit, so fans will waste less time.” – he explained.
However, despite the European venue’s efforts to impress both the fans and Formula 1 itself, there are still many doubts about its long-term future, as the sport increasingly moves towards America and events in major cities like Las Vegas. The available slots are inevitably decreasing, and many media outlets consider the alternating of circuits from year to year a highly viable option.
