Formula 1 official tyre supplier Pirelli has decided to bring the Soft C5 compound for two of the next three rounds of 2023 season, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and the Emilia Romagna, which take place at the Baku City Circuit and Imola and will be separated by the Miami Grand Prix.
The Baku event will mark the first time the Italian tyre maker introduces the C5 compound this championship and will be used as a result of the Baku city circuit track characteristics: the tight corners and long straights where F1 cars can reach up to 340kph.
Pirelli believes thermal degradation will be a key factor given the high asphalt temperature at Azerbaijan. There will be similar circumstances at the Imola circuit in Italy, a venue that has been confirmed to also trial a new qualifying format based on just one compound used in Q1, Q2 and Q3. The “Alternative Tyre Allocation” format reduces the total tyre allocation for each car from 13 sets to 11 per weekend.
Pirelli will keep the same C4, C3, and C2 allocation for the Miami Grand Prix, which was also used in the last two races this season.
