In addition to speed shown on track in the start of the 2022 Formula 1 season, there is another aspect for which Scuderia Ferrari has shown clear improvement by performing as it did in the days of the invincible army of Jean Todt, Ross Brawn and Michael Schumacher: pit stops. In recent years, Red Bull had dominated this aspect of racing, with ever faster pit stops. One GP after another, however, in Maranello they managed to reduce the gap. Now the stops of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are among the fastest on the grid and – more importantly – they almost never have any issues.
Ferrari invested resources and time to understand the new Pirelli tyres, the same was done with pit stops. […] In Bahrain before Max Verstappen’s retirement […] Charles Leclerc’s mechanics were faster than Verstappen’s: 2 ″ 54 against 2 ″ 62 in the first stop, 2 ″ 81 against 2 ″ 92 of Red Bull for the second pit stop. Times which are the result of a long preparation, that began practically when the foundations of the new car were laid. As Mattia Binotto recalled after the opening race, 1300 pit stop simulations were carried out before the 2022 Formula One season.
Training that has a basis represented by the knowledge of the car, tires and the physical fitness of the mechanics. […] For years in Maranello the members of the racing team have followed a personalized program […]. Also because to make things more complicated, there was the need, due to the increase in GPs, to have more people involved in the pit stop, with the introduction of a shift. Nothing was left to chance, because everything comes in handy to make the world champion dream come true.
