Scuderia Ferrari’s 2022 Formula One championship has got off to the best possible start, with Charles Leclerc leading team-mate Carlos Sainz across the line to record the Maranello team’s 85th one-two finish in the series. This was the Italian side’s 239th race win and Charles’ third after those in Belgium and Italy from three years ago. He drove a perfect race, securing the first hat trick of his career, that is pole position, fastest race lap and the win. Carlos took the chequered flag in second place to record his fifth podium with the Scuderia, his seventh in total in Formula 1.
Scuderia Ferrari Team principal Mattia Binotto stressed that in the Bahrain Grand Prix, the Italian side focused on Max Verstappen, as the 2021 Formula 1 world champion was the main opponent of the Maranello team: “We knew we had two cars and that Max was in the middle. We evaluated scenarios in which we caught him in the grip. The primary goal was to try not to let Max win today. He was our opponent. It didn’t matter if one or the other of our drivers won in this logic. We were lucky in the final laps. But one has to know how to look for luck and we were there. Carlos was aggressive after the restart following the Safety Car. He would have done all he could to overtake regardless of Max’s problems.” – Mattia Binotto explained for Sky Sport F1 after the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix.
A perfect Ferrari even in the pits: “Beautiful pit stops today. The boys trained a lot. They have been training with these tires since April 2021 to start understanding how to make perfect tire changes. We reported the problems with the lids to the FIA and they modified them for everyone, because they could not be removed. The mechanics practiced more than 1300 pit stops before Christmas, a sign of dedication to our work and to the team, there is a desire to do well. I’m happy for everyone in Maranello, on the track and for the drivers. We want to fight on the track meter by meter.” – Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto concluded.
