In a recent Auto Motor und Sport episode, F1 reporter Michael Schmidt talked about the new power unit rules for the 2026 Formula 1 championship:
The new 2026 Formula 1 engine regulations were originally set to be voted at the FIA World Council meeting on the 29th of June but that will not happen now, as reported by Auto Motor und Sport’s Michael Schmidt who explained that there are problems internally at the FIA (the new FIA president did not want the date to be dictated by his secretary general).
Michael Schmidt: “The new president seems to be a bit on the [ego trip] and did not want to let his secretary general dictate the date. But now Stefano Domenicali has made it clear to the FIA that the vote has to be done soon, otherwise Audi/Porsche might be backing out. The president has now promised that he will make it in July. First there will be an F1 commission on the occasion of the Grand Prix in Austria and perhaps a special world council meeting will be held afterwards, i.e. a fax vote, and then the rules should be finalized, which would also suit Audi and Porsche in terms of timing.” – Auto Motor und Sport informs.
At the same time, Auto Motor und Sport provides updates about Audi and Porsche entering Formula 1, which could lead to an interesting situation regarding Red Bull and Honda:
“Audi’s first and preferred choice remains the Sauber team. Porsche will work Red Bull but a funny situation could arise for Red Bull. It becomes more and more clear that Honda wants to return to Formula 1. Red Bull would be in a difficult situation if Honda tells them now that they want to work with them in 2026 again. Red Bull can hardly say no to them.”

Michael Schmidt said that Honda usually take their time to decide, so by then, the Red Bull – partnership Porsche could have already happened. But the AMuS reporter is certain that Honda will return, a possible collaboration with Alpha Tauri or maybe taking over the whole team could actually be an option.
