Lewis Hamilton is fully motivated as he prepares to tackle the 2026 Formula 1 season, and he shared his thoughts ahead of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. The British driver revealed Ferrari’s main objective for the new campaign and also offered an honest assessment of the competition at the front of the grid.
On the eve of the 2026 Australian GP, drivers are eager to get back behind the wheel and push at full pace to truly understand the potential of this new generation of Formula 1 cars. Lewis Hamilton arrived at the Melbourne press conference with a distinctly positive mindset. After turning the page on a difficult 2025 season, the seven-time world champion is now ready to embrace what he hopes will be a completely different and far more competitive year.
Ferrari emerged as one of the surprises of pre-season testing, even though Mercedes remains the clear favorite on paper. The battle at the front is expected to be extremely tight, making it essential to maximize every single opportunity. The Scuderia worked extensively on this aspect throughout last season, although with the sweeping regulation changes, the championship effectively starts from scratch. That unpredictability adds excitement, but what the SF-26 has shown so far offers reassurance within Maranello.
Hamilton: “In Australia we want…”
“I wouldn’t say it’s about confidence. We covered a lot of mileage during winter testing. The team has done an incredible job, both at the factory and in managing the test sessions themselves. We learned a lot from last year. We’re leaving the negative experiences behind and moving forward with the positives. We’re clear-minded, prepared, and we know what we have to do. We also know that the new regulations represent a huge challenge for all of us.”
As already highlighted, Lewis Hamilton has completely reset compared to last season. The British driver also spoke about how different the situation feels compared to his first year with Ferrari.
“It’s different compared to the first year. And it’s a much nicer feeling having spent a year with the team, understanding the company culture and finding the way to work together. I think we’re well positioned as a team now; I feel very integrated within the group, so I’m much happier.”
That sense of integration and stability could prove crucial in a season defined by radical technical change. Hamilton emphasized how important it has been to understand Ferrari’s internal dynamics, working methods, and communication processes. In a sport where fine margins determine success, cohesion behind the scenes often translates directly into performance on track.
The 2026 objective: only one goal for Ferrari
The seven-time world champion then turned his focus squarely to the 2026 campaign, making it clear that both he and Ferrari share a single ambition:
“The goal is to win. That’s obviously what everyone is working for; all teams are doing it, but that’s our objective. To maximize every opportunity, hoping to be in the leading group from the very first races. Mercedes looks particularly fast and I’m not entirely sure Red Bull has shown its full potential yet, so it’s all very exciting. But I know that, regardless, I feel I have an incredible group of people behind me who are keeping their heads down, focused on performance, and determined to give their best every weekend.”
Hamilton’s words underline a balanced approach: ambition without arrogance, awareness without fear. While Mercedes appears extremely competitive and Red Bull may still have hidden performance in reserve, Ferrari is determined to fight from the opening round in Melbourne.
The Australian Grand Prix could therefore deliver surprises in every direction. With new technical regulations reshaping the competitive order and development set to play a decisive role over the season, the early races may offer only a partial picture of the true hierarchy.
What is certain is that Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari have a clear target in mind: victory. Whether that ambition can be realized immediately in Melbourne remains to be seen, but the mindset inside the Scuderia suggests a team ready to seize every opportunity and respond to the fierce competition from Mercedes and Red Bull throughout the 2026 Formula 1 season.
As Lewis Hamilton gears up for the 2026 Australian GP, his evolution within Ferrari marks a turning point for the team’s championship aspirations. With a deeper integration into the Maranello culture and a clear-eyed view of the challenges posed by Mercedes and Red Bull, the season opener in Melbourne will finally reveal if Ferrari’s winter promises can translate into race-winning reality.
