Aston Martin could become a major player in the Formula 1 driver market soon, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding Fernando Alonso’s future. One prominent name linked to the Silverstone outfit for 2027 is Ferrari star Charles Leclerc.
The team, backed by billionaire owner Lawrence Stroll, is gearing up for a pivotal 2026 season following a substantial investment to prepare Aston Martin for the new F1 regulations. Adding to the transformation, design guru Adrian Newey has been appointed team principal starting in 2026, with the task of turning Aston Martin into a championship contender.
Beyond technical upgrades, Aston Martin’s driver lineup post-2026 is under close scrutiny. Both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are set to be out of contract at the end of next year, and the Spaniard has indicated he could retire if the team delivers a competitive package. How Aston Martin performs at the start of the 2026 season will largely dictate the calibre of driver they may target for 2027.
Aston Martin pledges a “top driver” for 2027 amid Leclerc links
Corriere Della Sera reports that Aston Martin have assured their sponsors of securing at least one “top-tier driver” for 2027, independent of 2026 outcomes. Charles Leclerc, currently at Ferrari, is understood to be high on their wishlist. Adrian Newey’s mission to revolutionise Aston Martin aligns with Stroll’s ambition to justify his multi-million investment, and acquiring a world-class driver is central to the plan.
For Leclerc, 2026 represents a “make or break” year at Ferrari. After failing to win a Grand Prix in 2025 and finishing fourth in the F1 constructors’ standings, the Monegasque sees next season as crucial. The 28-year-old driver strengthened his reputation last year by outpacing teammate Lewis Hamilton by a margin few expected, yet he ended the season fifth in the drivers’ championship with 242 points.
Leclerc’s Ferrari future hinges on 2026 regulations
The new F1 rules for 2026—including changes to engines, chassis, aerodynamics, and tyres—could determine whether Charles Leclerc stays at Ferrari. Despite wanting to dismiss speculation about a 2027 move, the uncertainty remains due to Ferrari’s struggles in 2025. The Scuderia were the only one of the top four F1 teams to fail to win a race, with the Monegasque securing Ferrari’s sole pole position in Hungary.
Charles Leclerc capitalized on cooler conditions in Q3 to beat McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by 0.026 seconds in Hungary, only to drop from the lead to fourth due to team decisions to protect his skid plank. Such setbacks have fueled rumours about a potential Aston Martin move once Charles Leclerc’s current contract allows an exit.
With Adrian Newey now at the helm, Aston Martin appears better positioned than ever to attract Charles Leclerc for 2027. The Monegasque could break his Ferrari contract through 2029 if he chooses, opening the door for Aston Martin to sign him. Other top teams, including Red Bull, have reportedly explored the situation with Charles Leclerc’s manager Nicolas Todt, assessing options should Ferrari struggle under the 2026 regulations.
For Aston Martin, signing Charles Leclerc would signal a bold statement of intent in the F1 driver market and could cement their transformation into a championship-caliber team in the 2027 season and beyond.
