Formula 1 expands the show factor. Starting with the 2023 championship, the number of sprint race weekends will be doubled: from three to six. That had been known for a long time. Only the venues for the six mini-races on Saturday were missing. Shortly before the season finale of Formula 1 in Abu Dhabi, they are now certain, according to German automobile magazine ‘Auto Motor und Sport’.
The Brazilian Grand Prix weekend in Sao Paulo, seven days ago, made it clear to the Formula 1 top management one last time what the direction should be: commercial interests yes, but the sport must also benefit from the extra races over a third of the Grand Prix distance. There’s no point in holding Saturday’s Mini Grand Prix on circuits where overtaking is very difficult. Like was the case at Imola this season.
The additional entry fee that an organizer has to put on the table is of little use if the tension factor does not exist at all and there is no interesting action on track. That’s why the Formula 1 management specifically looked for high-speed racetracks with long straights on which drivers are encouraged to overtake.
As a result, according to Auto Motor und Sport, the six sprint events scheduled for the 2023 Formula 1 season will take place in Azerbaijan, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, United States (Austin) and Qatar.
