Ralf Schumacher has commented on the ongoing difficulties faced by Lewis Hamilton in the current Formula 1 season, noting how the Ferrari SF-25 appears to suit the driving style of Charles Leclerc much more effectively. Ralf Schumacher also weighed in on the rumors surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s potential early retirement.
At the start of the season, few would have predicted that Lewis Hamilton, seven-time Formula 1 world champion, would face such challenges compared to his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. Some even began to speculate about an early departure from Ferrari and a possible retirement from Formula 1. However, the on-track performances so far have confirmed this unexpected scenario. The British driver has struggled to reach the competitive levels he demonstrated in previous years, and his frustration is evident both in his words and his behavior within the paddock.
It is important to note that the Ferrari SF-25 is not a car capable of consistently challenging for the World Championship. This is not the high-performing vehicle Hamilton might have expected after witnessing Ferrari’s strong 2024 campaign. At the same time, Charles Leclerc seems able to extract the maximum potential from the car, frequently contending for pole positions and podium finishes.
For some, Lewis Hamilton may be too old to adapt
As a result, criticism of Lewis Hamilton has been unavoidable. Among the voices speaking out is former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher, who has increasingly commented on the situation surrounding the British driver at Ferrari. Ralf Schumacher stated in an interview with Bild: “Before the season began, I said things could go wrong. Right now, I see a lot of drama from him. He has openly criticized the team, made internal criticisms, and complained about the car. This kind of attitude doesn’t help anyone. The car suits Charles Leclerc’s driving style, not his. Maybe he’s too old to adapt to a car that isn’t ‘his,’ or perhaps he simply cannot manage it. I believe the decision to focus on Charles Leclerc was made a long time ago. However, I don’t think Lewis will retire in the near future.”
Ralf Schumacher’s comments highlight the growing perception among some experts that Hamilton’s current struggles may be linked not only to the car’s characteristics but also to the natural challenges of adapting to a different driving style later in his career. While retirement rumors have gained traction, it appears that the seven-time world champion remains committed to competing, even in a season filled with unexpected challenges and intense comparisons to his talented teammate.
