The Formula 1 competition is returning to the Middle East after the opening rounds in Bahrain and Jeddah. Two years after its debut, the Losail Circuit, situated on the outskirts of Doha in Qatar, is getting ready to host the second F1 race in its history. To make this event possible, the organizers have made numerous improvements to the circuit’s facilities. Among them, there’s a striking new feature in the pit lane that’s visible to everyone in Losail.
The most significant change is, of course, the asphalt, which now has a much smoother surface. This might create some grip issues in the early laps of Free Practice 1, but as the cars take to the track, this is expected to improve. However, what immediately catches the eye in the pit lane is a detail positioned above the team garages.
Normally, just above the car stalls, we used to see billboards displaying the team’s logo and the drivers with their respective race numbers. Here in Losail, a new structure makes its debut, which is a backlit panel that highlights its content. This type of “sign” could also be used in upcoming night races, and it’s highly likely that we’ll see it in Las Vegas as well. After all, the city situated in the heart of the Nevada desert is also known as the “City of Lights.”
The effect produced by this element is undoubtedly impactful and theatrical. It remains to be seen whether this feature above the team garages will be a distraction for the drivers when performing pit stops during Sunday’s race.
