Kimi Antonelli wins again and opens an 81-point championship lead
Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed his eighth victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season in Madrid and has moved another significant step closer to the Drivers’ Championship. With 292 points, the Mercedes driver now leads George Russell by 81 after his team-mate finished fifth in the Spanish Grand Prix.
The victory came after Andrea Kimi Antonelli took advantage of a Virtual Safety Car pit stop on his way to victory at Madring. The complete 2026 Spanish Grand Prix results show Max Verstappen finishing second and Lando Norris taking third.
Lewis Hamilton suffers first zero as title deficit reaches 101 points
It was a damaging afternoon for Lewis Hamilton’s championship challenge. The seven-time world champion recorded his first scoreless race of the season and remains on 191 points, leaving the Ferrari driver 101 behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Despite the setback, Lewis Hamilton remains third in the championship. However, the margin behind has increased dramatically, while the pressure from behind is also growing. Fans can follow all of the British driver’s latest results and developments in the dedicated Lewis Hamilton Ferrari section.
Lando Norris closes to within five points of Lewis Hamilton
Lando Norris was caught out by the timing of the Virtual Safety Car in Madrid, but the McLaren driver has nevertheless moved to within just five points of Lewis Hamilton in the championship standings. Lando Norris now has 186 points compared with the Ferrari driver’s 191, keeping the battle for third extremely close.
Charles Leclerc remains fifth with 167 points. The Monegasque driver is still ahead of Max Verstappen, although the Red Bull driver is beginning to close the gap after moving onto 145 points. Further coverage of Charles Leclerc’s 2026 campaign is available in the dedicated Charles Leclerc section.
Important points for Lawson, Colapinto, Lindblad and Hulkenberg
Further down the order, the Spanish Grand Prix also produced valuable championship points for Liam Lawson, Franco Colapinto, Arvid Lindblad and Nico Hulkenberg.
Liam Lawson now holds ninth place in the Drivers’ Championship with 59 points, while Arvid Lindblad is 11th on 31. Franco Colapinto follows with 27 points in 12th, with Nico Hulkenberg moving to seven points and 15th position.
At the front, however, the championship picture is becoming increasingly favourable for Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Eight victories and an 81-point advantage over George Russell have put the Mercedes driver in an increasingly commanding position, while Lewis Hamilton’s first zero of the year has left Ferrari’s leading championship contender 101 points away from the top.
