Formula 1 is a sport in constant evolution, with regulatory changes introduced approximately every five years to bring in new technologies and, at the same time, new elements that can shuffle the deck, bring the cars closer on the grid and create more competition on track, to make the sport more appealing to fans. Yet, in the recent cycles, the grid hasn’t equalized much, as some constructors, be it Red Bull or Mercedes, to mention the last decade, have found something more than others, leaving the opponents unable to recover the gap, with teams being forced to focus on the new regulation changes and therefore having to give up on any attempt to challenge the dominant team before the regulation change.
Fans don’t like this, and neither does the Federation, which faces many criticisms and limitations in its actions. For this reason, racing car designer Nikolas Tombazis, currently the Single Seater Director at Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, stated that the FIA is working to avoid a new clear dominance when the new rules arrive in the 2026 Formula 1 championship. “We don’t want to start the period with a big controversy, as happened the last time (with the introduction of hybrid turbo in 2014). Since then, we have learned a lot, and we can avoid any scandal,” said the engineer in a recent interview for Autosport.
