The departure of key figures from various FIA departments shows no signs of slowing down. The latest to leave is reported to be Tim Goss, the technical director of the single-seater division. The news comes from the BBC, but an official confirmation from the Federation is awaited. The British engineer is now a sought-after asset for several teams, given his experience at FIA and his contribution to shaping the upcoming regulations.
Tim Goss Heading to a Team
Tim Goss’s departure leaves the role of technical director of the FIA single-seater division vacant. It is not yet clear whether the Federation will appoint a replacement or if the duties of the British engineer will be taken over by Nikolas Tombazis, the current director of the single-seater division. In recent years, Goss has contributed to the formulation of the 2022 and 2026 regulations, overseeing the project of the new Formula 2 for 2024.
Tim Goss, 60 years old, has a history with McLaren, where he served as technical director from 2014 to 2018. According to the BBC, his next destination could be a return to a team, although the specific team remains unknown. Figures leaving FIA have historically been of great interest to teams. Tim Goss is no exception, having worked on the 2026 regulations, which, however, will not be published before January 2025.
Escape from FIA
Goss’s departure from the Federation closely follows that of Deborah Mayer, head of the women’s commission, and the sports director, Steve Nielsen. The latter’s role is expected to be filled by Tim Maylon, FIA director of safety since 2021. According to reports, the departure of these three key figures is attributed to discontent with the current internal workings of the Federation.
