F1 2026 | Matteo Bobbi reveals early paddock hierarchy after testing: where Ferrari stands
The 2026 Formula 1 season is fast approaching, with teams currently engaged in pre-season testing. After the winter sessions between Barcelona and Sakhir, the first indications of the potential competitive order for the F1 2026 World Championship are beginning to emerge. Among technical analysis and impressions gathered in the paddock, former driver and Sky Italia commentator Matteo Bobbi has attempted to outline a provisional ranking, highlighting how Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull and McLaren appear after the opening tests.
The early hierarchy after winter testing
According to the former Italian driver, the team that looked most solid during the sessions at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and the Bahrain International Circuit was Mercedes. Close behind, in his view, are Ferrari and McLaren, with Red Bull Racing slightly further back.
Behind this leading group, with a more noticeable gap, Matteo Bobbi identifies Alpine and Haas as potential outsiders, particularly in light of the progress they seem to have made compared to the 2025 season.
This analysis is based both on what was observed on track and on information gathered within the paddock. However, it remains closely tied to the specific context of testing, where fuel loads, engine modes and technical programs can radically alter the apparent competitive picture.
Bobbi’s view: Mercedes ahead, but with caution
“From what I have seen and from the information I have collected in the paddock, my personal ranking puts Mercedes in first place, with McLaren second and Ferrari very close, practically on the same level. Immediately behind, by a very small margin, I see Red Bull,” the Italian said on the Beyond The Grid podcast.
“Then, with a certain gap, there are Alpine and Haas, which in my opinion are the two teams that have made the most evident step forward compared to last season. This does not mean that Mercedes will certainly win the World Championship or that there will be no competition. I am simply saying that, based on what we have seen between Barcelona and Bahrain, they look like a very well-prepared team, and I have the feeling that they are hiding their true potential more than the others, with something really interesting in hand,” he concluded.
These remarks reinforce the idea that the 2026 Formula 1 season could begin with extremely close margins at the front. Pre-season testing often proves deceptive, yet the early impressions suggest a well-prepared Mercedes, with Ferrari and McLaren immediately behind and a Red Bull outfit that cannot be underestimated.
Only the opening Grand Prix of the season, however, will reveal whether these early paddock hierarchies truly reflect the competitive reality on track.
As the teams focus on the last days of testing and will then pack up their equipment and head toward the season opener, the focus will shift from data collection to pure performance. Bobbi’s rankings provide a fascinating snapshot of a sport in transition, where the arrival of new technical regulations has shuffled the deck and reset the expectations for every manufacturer on the grid. Whether Mercedes can maintain this perceived advantage when the lights go out in Melbourne is the question every fan is now waiting to have answered.
