Unlike Haas, Cadillac is seeking independence from Ferrari in Formula 1: an interview reveals the reasoning behind this strategic decision.
Greater independence, greater freedom of choice: Cadillac wants to be the master of its own destiny in Formula 1 and is therefore distancing itself from Ferrari. Unlike Haas, which has fully leveraged its technical partnership with the Prancing Horse, the new American team intends to follow its own path. Yes to the Ferrari Power Unit and gearbox, but everything else must reflect the philosophy of Graeme Lowdon’s team.
Formula 1 represents a demanding technical challenge, especially for a brand-new outfit making its debut in the pinnacle of motorsport. In recent seasons, new entrants have often relied heavily on established teams. A clear example is Haas, which for years has benefited from a fruitful technical partnership with Ferrari. This close relationship has allowed the American squad to use not only the Maranello-built Power Unit but also several other components permitted under the regulations.
Although Cadillac, at least during its initial seasons, will also be a customer of Ferrari, its approach will be different. “Perhaps the thing we have done slightly differently compared to, let’s say, the last new team to enter Formula 1 is that we firmly believe we must be the architects of our own destiny and that we are becoming a works team,” explained Pat Symonds in an interview with motorsport.com.
Cadillac chooses independence from Ferrari
“If you look at our car, you will see that we have not simply purchased every component available,” continued the consultant of the American outfit. “Since we were using the Ferrari engine, we decided to take their gearbox as well, but we did not buy the entire rear end as others may have done. We believed it was essential to design and manufacture in-house the gearbox casing, the rear suspension and related elements.”
“Therefore, even though there are still several components that can legally be bought, we chose not to do so because, as I mentioned, being the master of your own destiny and fully understanding the philosophy behind your project is crucial if you want to make progress. It is difficult to develop someone else’s philosophy unless you truly understand every nuance that defines it.”
By choosing to design key structural elements like the rear suspension and gearbox housing in-house, Cadillac is signaling its intent to compete as a true constructor rather than a satellite team. This independent approach reflects a long-term vision where technical autonomy is viewed as the only viable route to eventual championship contention and a unique identity on the grid.
