Melbourne hosts the opening round of the 2026 Formula 1 season
The Albert Park circuit in Melbourne once again provides the stage for the opening race weekend of the Formula 1 World Championship. This year, however, the anticipation surrounding the Australian Grand Prix is even greater than usual, as the 2026 season marks the beginning of a new technical era for the sport.
The Australian GP therefore represents the first real opportunity to evaluate the competitive order among the teams after the introduction of the revised technical regulations. Throughout the paddock, fans and analysts alike have been eager to understand which teams have interpreted the new rules most effectively and which drivers will emerge as early contenders.
Last season, victory at Albert Park went to Lando Norris after a dramatic race that was heavily influenced by changing weather conditions and rain showers. This year’s event, however, begins with very different expectations as teams look to establish themselves at the start of a completely new Formula 1 cycle.
Mercedes dominates qualifying in Melbourne
Qualifying for the 2026 Australian Grand Prix confirmed many of the expectations that had emerged during the earlier practice sessions. Mercedes delivered a commanding performance by locking out the entire front row of the grid with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
George Russell secured pole position with a superb lap in Q3, finishing roughly three tenths of a second ahead of his young teammate Antonelli. The result marks a strong start to the new season for the German team and highlights the competitiveness of the Mercedes package under the new regulations.
Behind the silver cars, rookie Isack Hadjar impressed by claiming third place on the grid, delivering an excellent qualifying performance for Red Bull’s junior squad. The French driver managed to position himself ahead of several more experienced competitors in what turned out to be an extremely tight session.
Ferrari, meanwhile, had to settle for fourth and seventh place on the grid with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton respectively. Despite showing promising pace during practice sessions, the Scuderia was unable to match the outright speed displayed by Mercedes during the decisive Q3 laps.
The battle behind the front row proved incredibly close, with five drivers separated by less than two tenths of a second in the final classification. Such small margins underline how competitive the field has become under the new Formula 1 regulations.
One of the biggest surprises of the session was the early exit of Max Verstappen. The Red Bull driver was unable to set a lap time in Q1 after crashing earlier in the session, forcing the Dutchman to start the race from the back of the grid.
