F1 | Italian GP 2025 qualifying results and summary: how did Ferrari perform at Monza?

Qualifying for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix at Monza has just concluded, and the starting grid for tomorrow’s race is now set. Yesterday’s and this morning’s practice sessions showed a McLaren in excellent form, with Ferrari not far behind, ready to put pressure on the Papaya team. Let’s take a closer look at how the qualifying session unfolded and see the full starting grid for the Italian GP.

Italian GP qualifying: who will start from pole at Monza?

Q1

Green lights! All drivers immediately lined up in the pit lane for the first qualifying session at Monza. Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell took the track first on yellow tires. In the early minutes, the two Ferraris set the two fastest provisional times. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, on their initial laps, began setting the pace, taking first and second positions ahead of Charles Leclerc by nearly two-tenths of a second. Mercedes’ choice to run George Russell on medium tires paid off, as he posted the first provisional time of 1:19.414. Everyone except Russell went out for a second attempt.

Eliminated: Isack Hadjar, Lance Stroll, Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, Liam Lawson.

Q2

The start of Q2 was delayed by a few minutes while track marshals cleaned the circuit. Carlos Sainz Jr. was the first on track, giving a tow to his teammate Alex Albon, who unfortunately made a mistake at Ascari and couldn’t capitalize. Max Verstappen delivered a brilliant lap of 1:19.140 on new red tires with a tow from Oscar Piastri. Lando Norris faced difficulties and had to abort his first lap, returning to the pits.

Everyone went out for a second attempt to secure a place in Q3. Eliminated: Oliver Bearman, Nico Hülkenberg, Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon, Esteban Ocon.

Q3

Green lights again! The final attempts to fight for pole position. Lando Norris set the first time on used tires. On his first lap, Charles Leclerc posted the provisional fastest time of 1:19.007, soon overtaken by Max Verstappen by 84 thousandths of a second. The Dutch driver benefited from a tow from his teammate Yuki Tsunoda. The second attempt turned into a strategic battle of tow lines. Leclerc was unable to improve and was overtaken by Oscar Piastri. Max Verstappen secures pole position at Monza ahead of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Charles Leclerc will start fourth, while Lewis Hamilton will start tenth due to his five-place grid penalty.
