Current situation
The current data confirms that no driver has any margin left: every further replacement of key power unit components will result in a grid penalty. Given the nature of the Interlagos circuit, having a fresh power unit with a few extra horsepower is especially valuable in Brazil. It’s not out of the question that, depending on qualifying results, some teams may decide to take a grid penalty in order to install a new unit that can also be rotated in upcoming races.
Update
As expected, several teams have broken parc fermé regulations to replace certain components and adjust their setups. Among them is Max Verstappen, who is taking advantage of his poor qualifying result to fit a new power unit. This decision should benefit him both in today’s Grand Prix and in the remaining rounds of the season — especially in Las Vegas.
Current overview
Beyond the limits (using five or more ICE/TC/MGU-H/MGU-K components): Lewis Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda, Fernando Alonso, Pierre Gasly, Kimi Antonelli, Franco Colapinto, Olivier Bearman, Isack Hadjar, and Liam Lawson. Any further replacements will result in at least a five-place grid penalty.
At the maximum limit (four units): Alexander Albon, Nico Hülkenberg, Gabriel Bortoleto, Esteban Ocon, Max Verstappen, Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, George Russell, Lance Stroll, and Carlos Sainz. For these drivers, the next component change would trigger a ten-place grid penalty.
