The second hour of running at the Zandvoort circuit, the fifteenth round of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, has concluded. Here’s a look at how the action unfolded.
Dutch GP 2025 FP2 – McLaren leads while Ferrari struggles
After a first practice session dominated by the usual McLaren performance, the final hour at Zandvoort became the real test for the weekend. Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes were all searching for answers to assess their true competitiveness at the start of the second phase of the 2025 season.
The session took place under the following weather conditions: air temperature 19°C, track temperature 27°C, 61% humidity, and a 2.7 m/s wind from the south. Pirelli brought the following tyres for the session: C2 Hard, C3 Medium, and C4 Soft.
FP2 session summary
The action began with a variety of tyres on track: Haas and Sauber on soft, Red Bull and Ferrari on hard, and McLaren on medium tyres. The session was immediately interrupted by a major crash from Lance Stroll, who destroyed his Aston Martin AMR25 at Turn 4. A red flag was deployed to repair the barriers and safely recover the car.
Chaos continued shortly after the restart when Isack Hadjar’s Visa Cash App car stalled on track, prompting the race direction to deploy the Virtual Safety Car while his vehicle was recovered. After half an hour, there had been very little continuous running on track.
Once action resumed, the soft tyres made an appearance. Lewis Hamilton, struggling again with a temperamental SF-25, spun on his first push lap. It was the seven-time world champion’s second spin of the day. Eight minutes later, the red flag appeared once more, this time due to Alex Albon hitting the barriers outside Turn 1. Meanwhile, Lando Norris had already risen to P1 ahead of Fernando Alonso and Oscar Piastri, while Ferrari struggled to complete their push laps. Hamilton ended sixth and Charles Leclerc eighth.
Normal running resumed with 14 minutes to go on the clock. McLaren returned to track on medium tyres to focus on race pace simulations, having clearly gathered the needed data with light fuel loads. Once again, as seen in FP1, car number 4, the MCL39, excelled. Norris seemed particularly at ease on Zandvoort’s undulating layout. Piastri struggled a bit more but still posted times faster than most of the competition.
The session, heavily interrupted by incidents, clearly highlighted McLaren’s strength on the Dutch track. Ferrari, meanwhile, failed to show pace and struggled significantly in race simulations. There is still plenty of work to be done by the Maranello team to find the right setup and balance.
