The 2024 Formula 1 season is set to continue with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, scheduled to take place at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit from March 7 to March 9. As teams and drivers gear up for the second round of the new season, one factor that could significantly impact the weekend is the unpredictable weather in Jeddah.
Jeddah Corniche Circuit Overview:
The Jeddah Corniche Circuit is a street circuit located along the picturesque Jeddah Corniche waterfront. Known for its high-speed straights and challenging corners, the track made its debut in the Formula 1 calendar in 2021 and has since become a fan and driver favorite. The track, with its unique layout and stunning backdrop, promises an exciting start to the 2024 season.
Typical Weather in Jeddah:
Jeddah, being situated on the coast of the Red Sea, generally experiences a desert climate characterized by hot temperatures and minimal rainfall. However, the beginning of March can bring some variability in weather conditions. Daytime temperatures often range from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius (mid-70s to low 90s Fahrenheit), providing a comfortable setting for racing.
Weather Impact on the Race Weekend:
The potential variability in weather conditions adds an element of uncertainty to the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. While the region typically enjoys dry and warm weather, unexpected changes could affect the teams’ strategies and the overall dynamics of the race. Jeddah is known for occasional strong winds, and this could pose a challenge for the drivers, especially through the fast and technical sections of the circuit. Teams may need to adjust their car setups to handle varying wind conditions.
The temperature difference between day and night in Jeddah can be significant. Cooler temperatures during the evening could impact tire performance and grip levels, forcing teams to carefully manage their setups for both day and night racing.
The first race of the year clarified some of the doubts that had remained unresolved at the end of the tests. Red Bull is still the car to beat, although perhaps the advantage over rivals is less than what it was in a 2023 that saw total dominance by the team led by Horner.
Behind the reigning World Champion team, it seems to be Ferrari. The Scuderia presented itself in Bahrain with a very different car from the SF-23, and the progress (despite the issues faced by Leclerc) was evident on the track.
