Max Verstappen has taken a commanding win at the Styrian Grand Prix, extending his lead at the top of the drivers standings ahead of rival Lewis Hamilton. The Dutchman, who started in pole position, dominated the race from lights out to chequered flag.
Ferrari had hoped to gain some positions at the race start in order to make up ground after the poor qualifying session on Saturday, but unfortunately things did not go as planned: Charles Leclerc slightly collided with Pierre Gasly, enough for the SF21 to need a front wing change and send the Monegasque driver to the back of the grid. After Charles’ very early pit stop, the Monegasque driver made good progress with the fresh hard tyres and managed to recover until the points zone, finishing P7 after some very nice overtaking moves.
Carlos Sainz had a normal start, without losing or gaining any positions, but as the race progressed the SF21 showed a good pace and most importantly did not encounter any of the tyre issues from last weekend: Carlos was thus able to extend his first stint while also having solid lap times, which allowed him to gain several places after his pitstop. In the final stages of the race, Carlos tried to get close to Lando Norris and gradually reduced the gap but not enough to be able to catch the McLaren driver until the end.
