Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed back-to-back pole positions in Formula 1 for the first time in his career with a dominant display at the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix.
Both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz made it to Q2 without any issues (1:04.745 for Charles and 1:04.859 for Carlos at the end of Q1), with Nicholas Latifi, Esteban Ocon, Kimi Raikkonen, Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin who were eliminated after the first round.
As expected, the fight for the fastest 10 drivers to progress to Q3 was extremely tight, given the characteristics and length of the Red Bull Ring circuit and unfortunately Carlos Sainz was not able to make it to Q3. The Spanish driver made an error in Turn 9 which did not allow him to improve in his final attempt. Charles Leclerc barely got through to Q3, with a 1:04.646, finishing just two places above the line, despite both Ferrari drivers used the soft tyres, unlike Mercedes and Red Bull. At least Carlos will be able to choose the tyres for tomorrow’s race start from P12 (most likely mediums).
In the final stages of qualifying, Charles Leclerc got the most out of the SF21’s potential and finished P7 with a 1:04.472.
