Red Bull was back to showing an impressive performance in Mexico City after a disappointing qualifying and won with Max Verstappen, who further extended his advantage in the standings against Lewis Hamilton. The Dutchman was able to overtake both Mercedes cars at the start, with Valtteri Bottas hindering his teammate before being hit by Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren. The seven-time world champion thus had to settle for second position, resisting the attacks of Sergio Perez in the final part of the race, as Perez still took his first podium in front of the home crowd.
Fourth place for Pierre Gasly, who completed a very solid race with the AlphaTauri and was able to keep the two Ferrari cars of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz at bay without difficulty. The two Reds tried to attack the Frenchman with strategy, as the Monegasque also let the Spaniard pass him only to regain his position only on the last lap.
Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso and Lando Norris completed the Top 10, with Antonio Giovinazzi immediately off the points and victim – once again – of a bad strategy by Alfa Romeo. Bottas finished far from the points zone in 15th place and asked to do two extra stops before being able to take away the fastest lap from Max Verstappen.
