Scuderia Ferrari Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen admits to being a little frustrated after missing out on pole position during the qualifying session for the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix on Saturday, calling second place on the grid “a bit disappointing”. Kimi finished the session just 0.168 seconds behind his Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 teammate Sebastian Vettel during the final stage of qualifying at the Hungaroring track, thus completing a front row lock-out for the Maranello team ahead of the race on Sunday.
Despite enjoying one of his strongest qualifying displays of the 2017 Formula One championship, Kimi Raikkonen was unhappy with his final flying lap, calling it “not too good”:
“The start was good and the end was not too bad but then at the chicane I braked on the outside kerb and got loose and really threw it away there. It was decent enough still for second place but it’s a bit disappointing. I felt I had it quite comfortably but couldn’t really finish it.” – the Finnish driver admitted, as reported by the Italian media at the end of the qualifying session.
Scuderia Ferrari appears to have the upper hand over rival Mercedes in Budapest thanks to the tight and twisting nature of the Hungaroring track, but Kimi Raikkonen is not resting on his laurels: “Yesterday wasn’t the easiest day and today we have been pretty happy with things. I managed to improve my car for qualifying and I must say we are happy with how they are handling now. So far, so good. But tomorrow is going to be a long race and a hard battle so we have to keep going.” – Kimi Raikkonen concluded, as reported by Italian national sports newspaper based in Rome Corriere dello Sport, ahead of the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix, the last race of the 2017 Formula One season before the summer break.
Scuderia Ferrari’s remarkable form in qualifying was every more astounding given a relatively undistinguished showing by their standards on Friday. Team principal Maurizio Arrivabene said that the big step forward had been down to hard work overnight: “The guys, they were quite calm yesterday. They were working on the car knowing the potential. Yesterday night we were working until late to find the proper balance.”
