Ferrari junior Robert Shwartzman was the only young driver who took part in today’s testing session in Abu Dhabi, as the rest of the field used modified mule cars on the new 18-inch tyres for 2022. Teams were only allowed to field a young driver on one of the two days of testing, with all bar Haas opting to do so on Tuesday, as Robert Shwartzman tested for the Maranello team on Tuesday.
Russian racing driver who competed in the FIA Formula 2 Championship for 2020 and 2021 set a fastest lap time of 1m25.348s with 40 minutes remaining in the test day, giving him top spot by almost half a second from McLaren’s Lando Norris. Norris finished second in a modified version of McLaren’s 2021 MCL35M car, completing more than 100 laps on Pirelli’s 2022 compounds that were made available to those running mule cars. Shwartzman’s running was completed on the 13-inch tyres used this year.

Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz took to the track for the Italian side and clocked more than 150 laps en route to sixth place, behind Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri). The best lap time of Carlos was 1.26.706, about 1.3 seconds slower than Robert Shwartzman’s best lap time of the day for Haas, at the end of a testing session in which the focus was not at all on fast time, but rather on gathering data for Pirelli regarding the tyres for the 2022 Formula 1 season.
That’s it for 2021. Formula 1 will return with official on-track running at the end of February with pre-season testing in Barcelona.
