Rain could influence the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix weekend at Zandvoort, with the highest risk currently centred on Friday and, crucially, Saturday morning’s Sprint. Formula 1 returns from the summer break for the Dutch Grand Prix Sprint weekend, and the famously changeable weather on the North Sea coast could immediately complicate proceedings.
This will also be Formula 1’s final Dutch Grand Prix before Zandvoort leaves the championship calendar. Appropriately for a late-summer weekend at the coastal circuit, unsettled conditions could accompany the farewell, with rain potentially affecting several parts of the programme.
Zandvoort weather forecast remains unpredictable
The Zandvoort weather forecast continues to evolve, with rain already falling during the opening days of the week. Showers could persist through to the end of the weekend, although they are not necessarily expected to coincide with Formula 1’s official sessions.
Friday and Saturday currently carry the greatest chance of precipitation, adding another variable to an already intense weekend because of the Sprint format. According to the current AccuWeather forecast, Friday has a 70% probability of rain, with showers expected mainly during the morning before brighter conditions arrive later in the day. The risk should therefore decrease by the time Sprint Qualifying takes place in the afternoon.
Saturday Sprint faces the highest rain threat
The main concern for Formula 1 is Saturday morning. The probability of showers currently stands at more than 60%, potentially bringing wet conditions for the Sprint scheduled to begin at 12:00 local time.
The main Grand Prix qualifying session later on Saturday is not expected to be affected by significant rain. Conditions should improve as the day progresses, following a pattern similar to Friday with showers in the morning and clearer weather during the afternoon.
Sunday is expected to be considerably more stable. The current forecast gives only a 20% probability of rain, with partly sunny conditions and a maximum temperature of around 20°C predicted for the Grand Prix.
Wind could add another challenge at Zandvoort
Rain is not the only weather factor teams and drivers will need to consider. Zandvoort’s location close to the North Sea means gusty conditions are common, and the wind could influence car behaviour and driver confidence, particularly with Formula 1’s new aerodynamic characteristics.
Saturday is currently expected to be the windiest of the three days, with north-westerly winds of around 26 km/h and gusts reaching 33 km/h. Friday could bring north-north-westerly winds of 17 km/h with 30 km/h gusts, while Sunday is forecast to feature winds of approximately 20 km/h and gusts reaching 28 km/h.
The changing conditions could make Zandvoort’s first Sprint weekend even more complicated, particularly after teams have only one free practice session to prepare their cars. Tyres and set-up are already expected to be important factors at the Dutch circuit, with the Zandvoort Sprint creating an additional tyre and set-up challenge.
2026 Dutch GP weather forecast by day
- Friday, 21 August: Rain in the morning, clearing during the afternoon. Maximum temperature 20°C. NNW wind at 17 km/h, gusting to 30 km/h. Rain probability: 70%.
- Saturday, 22 August: Rain in the morning, clearing during the afternoon. Maximum temperature 19°C. NW wind at 26 km/h, gusting to 33 km/h. Rain probability: 60%.
- Sunday, 23 August: Partly sunny. Maximum temperature 20°C. NNW wind at 20 km/h, gusting to 28 km/h. Rain probability: 20%.
The forecast will continue to be monitored as the weekend approaches. Recent editions of the Dutch Grand Prix have repeatedly shown how difficult it can be to predict when weather systems, sometimes intense ones, will reach Zandvoort at this time of year. Formula 1’s farewell appearance at the circuit is scheduled for 23 August as part of the 2026 Formula 1 calendar.
