Fred Vasseur faces fresh Ferrari F1 replacement rumours amid Christian Horner speculation
Ferrari F1 team principal Fred Vasseur has already endured significant pressure this year, but recent speculation linking Christian Horner to the role has reignited questions about his long-term future at Maranello. Despite signing a contract extension through 2027, Fred Vasseur continues to navigate intense scrutiny from the media and fans alike as the Scuderia struggle through one of their most challenging seasons in recent memory.
The 2025 Formula 1 season has fallen far short of Ferrari’s expectations. Fred Vasseur initially believed this year could mark Ferrari’s first drivers’ championship since Kimi Raikkonen in 2007 and their first constructors’ title since 2008. Instead, the team finds itself underperforming across multiple metrics, with Lewis Hamilton experiencing the most difficult season of his career and Charles Leclerc struggling to close the gap to McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.
Heading into the United States Grand Prix, Hamilton is mathematically out of contention for the 2025 drivers’ title, trailing Oscar Piastri by 211 points with only 174 available across the final six races. Leclerc remains in the hunt on paper but is 163 points behind the championship leader. While the Monegasque driver has secured all five of Ferrari’s podium finishes this season and claimed their only pole position, the team has yet to register a single Grand Prix victory, further intensifying pressure on Fred Vasseur and the technical team.
Horner rumours fueled by Fred Vasseur’s different approach to the Italian press
Speculation about the French manager’s future first emerged during the 10th round of the season in Canada, with reports suggesting that he had just three races to prove his value to Ferrari. His contract was set to expire at the end of the year, and Ferrari’s disappointing results had provoked frustration among fans and media alike. However, Fred Vasseur’s new deal through 2027, signed in July, was expected to stabilize his position. Yet, the emergence of Christian Horner as a potential replacement has reignited doubts.
According to AS Web, Fred Vasseur has been deliberately targeted by segments of the Italian press. These veteran journalists are reportedly dissatisfied because Fred Vasseur has never provided the “special” insider information that his predecessor, Mattia Binotto, shared with them. Some sources suggest lingering resentment over Mattia Binotto’s 2022 dismissal has contributed to ongoing scrutiny, with Horner’s departure from Red Bull in September further intensifying speculation.
Ferrari sources insist Christian Horner is not in the pipeline
Despite the media frenzy, insiders at Ferrari have dismissed claims that Horner will replace Vasseur. AS Web reports that Scuderia sources insist there is no official plan to bring the Briton to Maranello, and the team is working to downplay the circulating rumours. Fred Vasseur, however, understands that contractual security is only one part of maintaining his leadership role, and Ferrari’s lack of victories this season—making them the only team among F1’s top four without a win—continues to apply pressure on both him and his technical team.
Vasseur’s future remains under the microscope as Ferrari prepares for the final six rounds of the 2025 Formula 1 season. While speculation about Horner is largely media-driven, the combination of disappointing results, high expectations, and intense Italian press coverage ensures that Fred Vasseur will have to deliver tangible improvements on track to secure long-term confidence from team chairman John Elkann and the wider Scuderia organization.
