Why Ralf Schumacher believes Lewis Hamilton is perfectly positioned to thrive at Ferrari in 2026. Ralf Schumacher: Lewis Hamilton’s experience makes him a perfect fit for Ferrari now.

Lewis Hamilton, SF26, 2026 F1

Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher believes the sweeping technical changes introduced for the 2026 Formula 1 season could work strongly in favor of Lewis Hamilton as the seven-time world champion begins a new chapter with Ferrari. According to Schumacher, the new generation of cars and power units may better suit Lewis Hamilton’s driving style compared to what he experienced during his first season with the Scuderia.

The opening race of the season at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne offered encouraging signs for Ferrari and for Lewis Hamilton. The British driver crossed the finish line in fourth place, equaling his best full Grand Prix result from the previous campaign. Ahead of him, George Russell secured victory for Mercedes, leading teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli across the line, while Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc completed the podium in third position.

Although the final classification placed Lewis Hamilton just outside the podium positions, the race suggested that Ferrari could be highly competitive in 2026. Over the closing stages of the event, Hamilton reduced the gap to Charles Leclerc significantly and later indicated that with a few additional laps he might have been able to challenge his teammate for third place. That performance reinforced the belief among several experts that Hamilton may still be capable of fighting near the front of the grid.

Sky Sports analyst Martin Brundle had previously pointed out that the revised aerodynamic philosophy introduced under the new regulations could favor drivers with Hamilton’s style and experience. Ralf Schumacher shares a similar view. The former Jordan, Williams, and Toyota driver believes that the characteristics of the 2026 cars — including revised downforce levels and altered handling traits — may help unlock Lewis Hamilton’s potential at Ferrari.

Ralf Schumacher explains why the new F1 cars could suit Lewis Hamilton

Speaking on the Backstage Boxengasse Podcast, Ralf Schumacher discussed Lewis Hamilton’s performance in the opening race weekend of the season and explained why the current regulations might suit a veteran driver particularly well. Schumacher indicated that the latest generation of Formula 1 machinery appears to be more agile and responsive compared to previous designs.

According to Schumacher’s analysis, the smaller dimensions and improved maneuverability of the cars create a driving environment that experienced drivers can adapt to effectively. In his view, these characteristics align well with the skill set of someone like Lewis Hamilton, who is entering his twentieth season in Formula 1 and possesses an enormous amount of race experience.

Schumacher also suggested that the strategic elements of modern Formula 1 driving — particularly techniques such as lifting off the throttle earlier and managing corner entry speed — could play to the strengths of an experienced competitor. Drivers approaching the latter stages of their careers, he explained, tend to have a deeper understanding of risk management and race strategy, which can translate into more consistent performances over a race distance.

In Schumacher’s interpretation, this shift in driving style could reduce the pressure on Lewis Hamilton to constantly push the car beyond its limits. During the previous season, Hamilton was sometimes seen overdriving the Ferrari in an effort to extract maximum performance, which occasionally resulted in mistakes or excursions off track. Under the current regulations, Schumacher believes that the Briton may no longer need to take such aggressive risks in order to remain competitive.

Another factor highlighted by Schumacher involves the overall pace characteristics of the new cars. While Formula 1 machines remain extraordinarily fast, certain elements of the 2026 regulations — particularly related to aerodynamic configuration and energy deployment — mean that outright top speed on straights is no longer the sole determinant of performance. Instead, efficiency, consistency, and careful energy management play a larger role in determining race outcomes.

Energy management and lift-and-coast techniques remain key factors

Energy management has become one of the defining aspects of the 2026 Formula 1 technical regulations. With new hybrid power units placing greater emphasis on electrical energy recovery and deployment, drivers must constantly balance performance with battery conservation. As a result, techniques such as lift and coast — lifting off the throttle before braking zones to save energy — have become increasingly common throughout race weekends.

This approach is not entirely new for Ferrari drivers. During the previous season, both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc frequently expressed frustration about the amount of lifting and coasting required during races. The Scuderia often asked its drivers to reduce speed before corners in order to protect the car’s plank wear limits and maintain compliance with technical regulations.

One notable example occurred during the Mexico City Grand Prix, where Lewis Hamilton reportedly received numerous instructions from the pit wall to manage his pace through lift-and-coast techniques. Despite these constraints, the Ferrari man still managed to bring the car home in eighth place after a challenging race.

At the time, such restrictions were widely seen as a disadvantage for the Maranello team compared to rivals who appeared able to push harder throughout a race stint. However, the evolution of the sport’s technical framework may now transform that previous limitation into an unexpected advantage.

Because the new hybrid systems require careful battery management, drivers across the grid are now required to adopt similar energy-saving techniques. This means that Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, having already gained significant experience with lift-and-coast strategies during the previous season, could be better prepared than many of their competitors.

Experience could prove decisive for Ferrari’s driver lineup

Some analysts initially speculated that the new generation of Formula 1 regulations might favor younger drivers who are more accustomed to simulator-based preparation and digital energy management systems. However, Ralf Schumacher believes that experience could ultimately prove just as valuable — if not more so.

In Schumacher’s view, a veteran driver such as Lewis Hamilton possesses a deeper awareness of the risks associated with pushing too hard, particularly in high-pressure situations. This maturity can allow experienced drivers to manage races more intelligently, preserving both the car and the tires while still maintaining competitive pace.

The partnership between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc also provides Ferrari with a strong combination of experience and raw speed. While Leclerc continues to represent one of the fastest qualifiers on the grid, Hamilton’s racecraft and strategic understanding could prove crucial over the course of a long championship season.

Former world champion Jenson Button recently suggested that the sport may even be entering what he described as a new phase that could favor Lewis Hamilton once again. Although it remains too early to draw definitive conclusions, Ralf Schumacher’s analysis points in a similar direction, indicating that the new regulations may offer Lewis Hamilton an opportunity to rediscover the competitive edge that defined much of his remarkable Formula 1 career.
