Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is not going as expected, and this is evident even in his interviews. After finishing seventh at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and trailing Charles Leclerc by a significant 31 seconds, the British champion gave statements filled with frustration. A situation that prompted Martin Brundle, former driver and respected Sky Sports F1 commentator, to express his concern.
“It was horrible, not fun at all. I had no grip. The first stint had massive understeer, the car wouldn’t turn. The second stint was slightly better, but still no pace. Really awful,” Hamilton said after the race in Jeddah. Apart from the brilliant pole position and win in the China Sprint, the seven-time world champion has yet to find the right feeling with the SF-25. “I have no answers for my drop in form,” he admitted.
Martin Brundle: “It hurts to see Hamilton like this”
Martin Brundle commented emotionally on the Englishman’s struggles: “The pace is in there somewhere, but it’s very difficult to see it when Lewis is doing post-race interviews. He’s not happy with his performance, he’s more than disappointed: he’s puzzled.”
Martin Brundle pointed out that in some parts of the race Hamilton showed competitive lap times, but it all got lost in a constant up-and-down of performance: “It was a constant rollercoaster. It’s hard to believe he doesn’t understand the car.”
Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur described Hamilton’s approach as a series of “highs and lows”, and according to Martin Brundle the issue might lie in setup choices: “I don’t think he’s going in the right direction with the setup. I know from sources at Mercedes that Lewis appreciates certain characteristics. Here, he can’t get the car where he needs it.”
Time is passing and the difficulties are increasing. We are now close to the month of May, with a long preseason behind and a Charles Leclerc who looks perfectly at ease. For Hamilton, the risk of experiencing a “painful” season is becoming more and more real. A breakthrough is needed, and fast.
