As Ferrari’s championship ambitions continue to gather momentum in the 2026 Formula 1 season, comparisons between Lewis Hamilton and some of the greatest figures in the team’s history are becoming increasingly common.
While it would be premature to compare achievements, one former Ferrari insider believes the seven-time Formula 1 world champion has already brought back something the Scuderia has struggled to find since the days of Michael Schumacher: the ability to unite an entire organization behind a single vision.
Francesco Cigarini, a long-serving Ferrari mechanic who spent more than two decades working in Maranello, has witnessed multiple generations of drivers attempt to lead the Italian team back to the top of Formula 1. During his time at Ferrari, he worked alongside Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen, and Charles Leclerc, giving him a unique perspective on what separates great drivers from true team leaders.
According to Cigarini, Lewis Hamilton is beginning to display characteristics that remind him of Ferrari’s most successful period of the modern era.
That is particularly significant given Ferrari’s long wait for another drivers’ championship. The team has not celebrated a Formula 1 world champion since Kimi Raikkonen secured the crown in 2007. Several elite drivers have come close, but none have managed to complete the mission.
Fernando Alonso came within touching distance in both 2010 and 2012, while Sebastian Vettel mounted serious title challenges in 2017 and 2018. More recently, Charles Leclerc has carried Ferrari’s hopes during a rebuilding period, helping the team return to competitiveness under changing regulations.
Now, however, many within Formula 1 believe Lewis Hamilton could represent Ferrari’s best opportunity in years to finally end that drought.
Following his breakthrough victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, the Briton has emerged as a genuine championship contender and now sits within striking distance of championship leader Kimi Antonelli. More importantly, the momentum surrounding Ferrari appears stronger than at any point in recent seasons.
Why Lewis Hamilton reminds Ferrari insiders of Michael Schumacher
For Francesco Cigarini, the comparison is not primarily about driving style, statistics, or race victories.
Instead, it is about leadership.
The former Ferrari mechanic explained that the greatest champions possess an extraordinary ability to influence the people around them. They create belief, inspire confidence, and encourage entire organizations to raise their standards.
According to Cigarini, Michael Schumacher mastered this skill during Ferrari’s dominant era in the early 2000s. The German world champion did not simply drive the car. He helped shape the culture, motivate personnel, and create an environment where everyone felt responsible for pursuing excellence.
Cigarini believes Lewis Hamilton is beginning to generate a similar effect. In his assessment, elite drivers understand how to communicate their needs, establish clear objectives, and convince the people around them to fully commit to achieving those goals. The responsibility does not fall solely on the driver. Engineers, mechanics, designers, and factory personnel must also embrace the vision and transform ideas into performance.
According to the former Ferrari mechanic, that collective belief is often what separates championship-winning teams from those that merely possess fast cars. He suggested that in previous eras Ferrari did not always succeed in creating this level of unity around its leading driver. While there was never a shortage of talent, the organizational cohesion required to sustain a title challenge was sometimes missing.
With Lewis Hamilton, however, Cigarini sees signs of a different dynamic emerging.
The leadership effect Ferrari has been missing
One of the defining qualities of legendary Formula 1 champions is their ability to elevate everyone around them.
According to Cigarini, the best drivers do more than deliver lap times. They encourage innovation, stimulate ideas, and motivate team members to push beyond what they previously thought possible.
That influence often extends far beyond race weekends. Inside a modern Formula 1 operation, thousands of decisions are made every week. When a driver earns the trust and confidence of the entire organization, those decisions can become more focused, more decisive, and ultimately more effective.
Cigarini believes Lewis Hamilton’s presence is generating exactly that kind of environment. He sees a driver capable of bringing people together, creating enthusiasm, and encouraging Ferrari personnel to fully invest in a common objective. In his view, those characteristics are hallmarks of the sport’s greatest champions, including both Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.
The growing confidence surrounding Ferrari’s project appears to support that interpretation. Since the start of the season, the team has looked increasingly united, while several strategic and technical decisions have demonstrated a willingness to adapt around Lewis Hamilton’s feedback.
How Ferrari backed Lewis Hamilton’s technical requests
Perhaps the clearest example of Lewis Hamilton’s influence can be found in the development direction of the SF-26.
Earlier in the season, the seven-time world champion requested changes to the braking configuration after struggling to extract consistent performance from the car. The British driver preferred Carbon Industrie brake discs, a solution that provides a more immediate and aggressive braking response than the Brembo setup traditionally used by Ferrari.
The request reportedly generated significant discussion behind the scenes. Ferrari has maintained a long-standing relationship with Brembo, making any departure from established practices a notable decision. Nevertheless, team principal Fred Vasseur and Ferrari’s technical department worked to accommodate Lewis Hamilton’s preference.
The results have been difficult to ignore. Since adopting the revised setup, Lewis Hamilton’s performances have improved dramatically. His confidence under braking has increased, his consistency has improved, and his overall comfort level with the SF-26 appears significantly higher.
Interestingly, Charles Leclerc has also moved toward a similar configuration, recognizing the advantages it may offer.
That development highlights another important aspect of Lewis Hamilton’s growing influence. Ferrari is no longer simply listening to his feedback; it is actively incorporating many of his ideas into the broader development direction of the team. Such trust is rarely given lightly in Formula 1.
It is earned through experience, credibility, and results. As Ferrari prepares for the next stage of its championship campaign, Lewis Hamilton appears to have established all three.
Whether he ultimately delivers the drivers’ title Ferrari has been chasing for nearly two decades remains to be seen. However, according to one veteran who witnessed Michael Schumacher’s golden years firsthand, Lewis Hamilton has already restored something equally important: a sense of unity, belief, and purpose throughout the organization.
And for a team determined to return to the top of Formula 1, that may be the most valuable contribution of all.
