Why Great Rivalries Are So Important In Formula 1

Fernando Alonso mid-race

If you look at the great, golden age of any sport, they all share one thing in common: the greats of their era had rivals that helped to bring out the best in them. Since the start of this decade, it felt as though Verstappen was going to run away with over half a dozen titles in as many years. There was nobody who came close to challenging his dominance until the 2025 season.

However, now that he has been knocked off his perch, it is undeniable that next season is going to be much more interesting. Can Verstappen rise to the occasion? Can Norris stake his claim as the best of the decade and start winning more championships?

We’ve seen the greats of their era have their supremacy challenged, and ultimately, those who rise to the occasion can stake their claim as the great drivers throughout the sport’s history. However, from a viewership, marketing, and social media standpoint, it is crucial that the top drivers in the world compete at a similar level and that the great drivers spearhead this dynamic.

Mapping The Importance Of Modern Competition

Professional sports may have adapted to the times, especially in a digital context. We’ve seen new, modern sports emerge and create their own markets and pathways, legitimizing themselves as elite competitions.

Professional video gaming, or esports, as it is better known, has gone from the relative fringes of entertainment in the late noughties to a multi-billion dollar market. Due to this success, a buzzing set of subdivisions and a growing gambling market offering an array of odds have all been able to flourish in the digital age.

More companies than ever are offering a route for innovative fintech ideas to impact the sector, and while many people can check esports odds within a few seconds of opening their phone, it is the depth and scope of the market that are helping to elevate it as arguably the biggest subdivision within esports. Great rivalries in esports help generate engagement, offer competitive esports odds, and contribute to the industry’s health.

However, these markets are now attracting global interest and using social media to grow their numbers and bring in waves of new customers. As you can see in the link below, esports world championship highlights are easily accessible. It is crucial that the rivalries at the top of esports continue to generate interest and culminate in fair, competitive betting markets.

Formula 1 Rivalries & Their Dynamics

As is the case in so many sports, it’s not just about the rivalries; it is also about the personalities and the quality of said rivals. Professionals can be seen at the top of their sport for their generation, but if they do not have the competition to elevate them, they can be forgotten quickly in the history books.

Senna had Alain Prost, Schumacher had Mika Häkkinen, Hamilton had Alonso, Rosberg, and later Verstappen, and now Max has had to deal with Norris pipping him to the 2025 title in pretty unexpected, yet spectacular fashion. It was a back-and-forth that resulted in one of the most exciting championships in years, eclipsing the last couple of seasons where Verstappen had the whole thing wrapped up with plenty of races to spare.

From both casual and hardcore fan perspectives, these rivalries are crucial; they mean we watch the races with an air of anticipation, knowing that the race or championship is not a foregone conclusion, and they help elevate the overall performance of the top drivers in the sport.

Instead of a pedestrian and predictable Verstappen 2025 win, we are now left with the fascinating question of whether he can prove his greatness and rise to the top of the sport again next season. Aston Martin and Mercedes have both been rumoured to be making a move for the precocious talent, and all of these factors are going to make the 2026 season arguably the most anticipated of the decade thus far.

Measuring The Future Health Of The Sport

We’ve seen how, in other sports, the vacuum created by retiring or fading icons can have a detrimental impact on the overall well-being of the top tournaments. We saw the vacuum created by the Big Three in tennis when they retired and faded; we have seen it in combat sports when PPV megastars like Conor McGregor or Mike Tyson retire, and the sport enters a laboured limbo.

Formula 1 is definitely not in any danger of that at the moment, and the rivalries emerging at the top of the sport are a key reason an international audience remains so gripped by the action. As long as there are a number of elite drivers, all within a decent grasp of lifting the championship, then the health of the sport will be maintained for years to come.
