Why Ferrari failed to convert Hungarian GP pace into a podium. Ferrari’s Hungarian GP errors leave Charles Leclerc fourth and Lewis Hamilton fifth.

Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes W17), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), 2026 F1

Ferrari entered the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix as favourites but left Budapest without a podium after a race filled with mistakes, strategic doubts and missed opportunities. Charles Leclerc finished fourth and Lewis Hamilton fifth, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli strengthened his Formula 1 championship lead by recovering from seventh on the grid to third place, as shown in the complete 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix results.

Formula 1 now heads into its summer holiday alongside millions of Italians, and fans can enjoy the unfamiliar pleasure of seeing an Italian driver leading the World Championship around the halfway point of the season, although it is still unclear exactly how many postponed races will eventually be recovered.

Kimi Antonelli strengthens his F1 lead in Hungary

Andrea Kimi Antonelli has become a subtle and unexpected source of joy, one who could keep Italian supporters on the edge of their seats until the end of the campaign. At the Hungaroring, he raced with the measured maturity of a driver thinking clearly and unapologetically about the championship.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli did not win in Budapest because, for the first time this season, Mercedes did not have the strongest car. Nevertheless, the Italian still managed to place it on the third step of the podium, smiling as happily as though he had crossed the finish line first. On a day when victory was beyond his reach, he still gained points on his closest challenger, Lewis Hamilton, who now trails him by 50 points. His recovery from seventh and the championship significance of the result are explored further in this report on how Andrea Kimi Antonelli extended his Formula 1 lead in Hungary.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli therefore represents the image of happiness, while Ferrari unfortunately embody the bitterness of having thrown away a race they were theoretically expected to dominate. Charles Leclerc in fourth and Lewis Hamilton in fifth perfectly reflected a day that went completely wrong. The most ruthless assessment of Ferrari’s performance came from none other than Frédéric Vasseur, who acknowledged that mistakes by both the team and its drivers had ruined what could have been a celebration. The Ferrari team principal admitted that everything went wrong as Ferrari missed the podium.

McLaren’s Hungarian GP pace raises doubts over Ferrari

But would Ferrari really have dominated the Hungarian Grand Prix without those errors? I have my doubts, considering the speed shown by an upgraded McLaren and by Lando Norris. The reigning world champion finally returned to the top step after producing one of his strongest races from a strategic perspective, an area that has too often been a weakness for the British driver.

Pole position had already demonstrated that McLaren had recovered the sharpness of its best weekends. The perfect starts made by Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri then allowed the two McLaren drivers to form a wall in front of their rivals, a feat few expected. From that moment, Lando Norris began his charge and proved clearly faster than his teammate. A McLaren one-two appeared entirely possible before the technical failure that eliminated Oscar Piastri during the closing stages.

Lando Norris described the victory as one of his finest Formula 1 performances after converting McLaren’s qualifying speed into an authoritative race win. His confidence, pace and strategic control are detailed in the account of Lando Norris’ first victory of the 2026 season.

Contrasting races for Kimi Antonelli and George Russell

Starting seventh, Andrea Kimi Antonelli initially considered the bold gamble of completing one fewer pit stop than his rivals. He eventually had to abandon that plan, but he still raced in his own composed style and delivered an almost flawless performance, apart from his increasingly dangerous habit of exceeding track limits.

Once again, only one Mercedes driver truly featured near the front. George Russell, who might spend the summer break searching for an Indian spiritual healer or asking to be blessed, was left almost stationary at the start when his engine entered anti-stall through no fault of his own. He was then forced to recover through the field, but could manage only a disappointing seventh place. Mercedes later explained the engine-related problem behind George Russell’s failed launch.

Max Verstappen attacks as Ferrari disappear from victory fight

Lando Norris was outstanding, but the Hungarian Grand Prix also had another hero in Max Verstappen. The Dutchman finished second after attacking throughout the race with a Red Bull that remains some distance from the near-perfection currently demonstrated by McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari at their best.

Max Verstappen is also a central figure in the driver market, with his manager speaking to several parties, although Red Bull will do everything possible to keep him with the team for the 2027 season.

Ferrari, by contrast, never produced a meaningful response despite arriving in Budapest as the clear favourites. The team lacked impact in qualifying and was effectively absent from the battle for the leading positions during the race.

Ferrari Hungarian GP mistakes expose tyre strategy problem

Frédéric Vasseur attributed the result to several factors, but placed particular emphasis on the tyre sequence. Ferrari should have taken the risk of using the Pirelli Soft compound during the middle phase of the race instead of choosing the Hard tyres. The team subsequently acknowledged that its incorrect tyre strategy cost valuable positions in Hungary.

Charles Leclerc also made a poor start, immediately dropping from second to fifth. Lewis Hamilton remained ahead of his teammate throughout the race, but collected another five-second penalty after exceeding the pit-lane speed limit. The infringement was measured at just 0.1 km/h over the limit, while the FIA took no further action against Charles Leclerc following a separate investigation. The full decisions are explained in the report on Lewis Hamilton’s penalty and Charles Leclerc’s FIA verdict.

Even without the penalty, however, Lewis Hamilton did not possess the pace required to challenge the leading drivers.

Ferrari must start winning after the summer break

Budapest revealed a Ferrari that was reasonably quick but far too error-prone. Once the championship resumes after the August break, the team must begin winning consistently if it is to avoid wasting another Formula 1 season. The dates and remaining rounds can be found in the complete 2026 Formula 1 calendar.

The impression is that Ferrari are now more united and proactive than in previous years. However, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have grown tired of waiting for success, leaving both drivers vulnerable to occasional emotional swings that can ultimately carry a sporting cost. Charles Leclerc’s confusion over the SF-26’s fluctuating performance was evident in his comments about Ferrari’s inconsistency after the Hungarian Grand Prix.

On the other side stands an exceptionally calm Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who continues to astonish the Formula 1 world. He does not drive for Ferrari, however, and that creates divided emotions among the Maranello supporters.

An Italian driver leading the World Championship in a car competing against Ferrari is nevertheless a remarkable sight. It is wonderful to see it happening, especially when rivalries and the pettier aspects of sporting tribalism are put aside.
