Formula 1’s official Safety Car looked very different at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, with the Mercedes-AMG used by the FIA receiving a special Lightning McQueen-inspired Cars livery for Monza. The one-off design was created exclusively for the Italian weekend as part of the collaboration between Formula 1 and Disney, celebrating 20 years since the release of Pixar’s Cars.
The Safety Car ultimately did not need to enter the track during the Italian Grand Prix itself, meaning fans never saw the unusual design leading the Formula 1 field under race neutralisation. Even so, Lightning McQueen was a major presence throughout the Monza weekend, including a life-size appearance at the circuit and a lap of honour as part of the celebrations.
Why F1’s Monza Safety Car looked like Lightning McQueen
One important distinction was that Lightning McQueen was not actually serving as Formula 1’s Safety Car. The official vehicle available to Bernd Mayländer in the event of a race neutralisation remained the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+. For Monza, it had simply been given a distinctive Cars-themed makeover to mark the animated film’s 20th anniversary.
Had a Safety Car period been required during the race, it would therefore have been the normal FIA Mercedes-AMG driven by Bernd Mayländer that entered the circuit, only wearing its unusual Disney and Pixar-inspired colours. In the end, that scenario never occurred during the Grand Prix.
Lightning McQueen himself did make it to the Temple of Speed in full-size form as an official support vehicle. The number 95 character also appeared on track during the weekend for a ceremonial lap, bringing one of the most recognisable fictional racing cars into a real Formula 1 setting.

Why Lightning McQueen came to the 2026 Italian Grand Prix
The reason behind the crossover begins with an anniversary. Cars turned 20 in 2026, having first been released by Pixar in 2006, and Disney chose Monza for one of its most visible celebrations of the milestone. The event also took place only days after Lightning McQueen Day on 5 September.
Within the fictional Cars storyline surrounding the activation, former Italian rival Francesco Bernoulli was even presented as the character who had invited Lightning McQueen to the Italian Grand Prix. The celebrations extended well beyond the Safety Car, with a Radiator Springs-inspired fan zone, a screening of the film and a dedicated F1 x Cars merchandise collection forming part of the Monza programme.
The crossover fitted particularly well with one of Formula 1’s most famous venues. Monza’s reputation as the Temple of Speed provided an obvious meeting point between real Grand Prix racing and the fictional motorsport world that introduced many younger fans to racing through Cars. The activation added another distinctive element to a weekend already carrying enormous significance on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar.
How Cars became part of Formula 1’s Disney partnership
The Monza initiative formed part of the Fuel the Magic project between Formula 1 and Disney. The collaboration began in 2025 and has since been extended through the end of the 2028 season.
Cars joined the programme for the first time in 2026, expanding a partnership that had initially been centred mainly around Mickey & Friends. The Italian Grand Prix therefore became an important moment in the developing relationship, bringing together two very different interpretations of motor racing: the real-world competition of Formula 1 and Pixar’s fictional racing universe.

The real Mercedes F1 Safety Car behind the Cars livery
Beneath the animated-inspired graphics was one of the highest-performance Safety Cars ever used in Formula 1. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ had been introduced as the official FIA F1 Safety Car at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 612 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque, while its maximum speed is 317 km/h. It is also the first Formula 1 Safety Car equipped with fully variable all-wheel drive, giving the FIA a particularly capable machine for controlling the field when race conditions require intervention.
The Lightning McQueen design did not alter any FIA procedures or the Safety Car’s actual function. If neutralisation had become necessary at Monza, Bernd Mayländer would have driven the Mercedes-AMG onto the circuit in exactly the usual manner. The difference would simply have been one of the most unusual liveries seen on an official Formula 1 support vehicle.
Although the Cars-themed Safety Car never had the opportunity to lead the field during the race, its presence captured the idea behind the entire collaboration. For many children, Lightning McQueen represented an early introduction to racing. Twenty years after the original film arrived in cinemas, the character became part of a genuine Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend at one of motorsport’s most historic circuits.
