Why 2023 F1 cars will benefit Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen’s driving styles

In regards to the improvements that the teams are expecting especially in slow corners for the 2023 Formula 1 cars, the new Pirelli tires will also contribute to the improved speed. The new Pirelli tyres will make their debut in Bahrain on 23 February and will present some (small) changes. Especially the front ones, designed to reduce the heavy understeer that emerged above all and precisely in the slow parts of the tracks during the 2022 Formula 1 championship. In short, it was necessary to rebalance the front with a rear which, also due to the concept of this new generation of cars, tended to push a lot. In part, a solution will be found by the teams themselves and in part by the Italian tyre manufacturer.

How? Thanks to a new tyre construction (front), as the Pirelli 2023 tyres will have fronts designed to reduce understeer.

An aspect that will also produce fewer graining problems due to the greater front grip under the same conditions, especially on front limited circuits and which, in some respects, would have limited the potential of the Ferrari F1-75 car. In fact, even if the fast Italian car got off to a very good start to the 2022 Formula One season, it then showed that there was still a lot of work to do, especially on a mechanical level.

This chance should be an advantage for the driving styles of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc. Above all, the Dutchman suffered significantly from the understeer produced by his Red Bull RB18 at the start of the previous championship. “This year’s tires were going to favor understeer but we also contributed to this in the start of the season, with the excess weight of the RB18 pushing the balance further towards understeer. Once we started to lighten it, it became more agile and we were able to take full advantage of the front end. Because a car with understeer cannot be fast”. Precisely for this reason too, the teams expect faster cars than the previous ones right from the start of the 2023 Formula One season.
